  1. Good evening. It's our third day in Berlin with 19 children and 3 staff (including me). We've already done a huge amount and now I'm just waiting for the room inspection to be completed (I will not allow the children to live like slobs while they are here, even if they swear they're allowed to at home) and then we are going out to a Strassenfest. It's been glorious weather so far, but it's started raining just a few minutes ago. :-(

I'll add some more later if I can, but I have to go now. Work (in the form of 19 adolescents) calls!

  2. Isn't it amazing what kids say they can do at home, when they are miles away from that home and you can't check on it?

My 3 year old grandson tells me that his mommy (my daughter) always gives him cookies. He points to packages in the grocery store and says, "Mommy buys me those. Nana buy some for me?" His mother doesn't have refined sugar in any form in her house. If he gets a treat at home, it's usually raisins.

  4. Went to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp today and then went bowling this evening. Very long and tiring day.

  5. I believe it, PM. Just the thought of 19 teenagers exhausts me! As Karen said, you're a brave woman!

  6. Very brave indeed. 19 adolescents! If that's both sexes then you have your work cut out in the evenings. Have a wonderful time PM.

  7. PM you are giving them the vacation of a lifetime to remember. And one of the very best memories will be the fact that you held them to a high standard. They will love you always and treasure this time as they grow older. You are a blessing to them. May you be blessed by them as well. Enjoy your time.

  8. PM what a brave lady! Hope you have a wonderful time. I think that kids sometimes have no idea how they think they can get away with things! Do they think we just popped out of a pumpkin??? Have a super trip! Hugs and purrs!

  11. It's our last night tonight. We had an awards ceremony - each child was given a very small gift (two pencils and a postcard) awarded for something the three staff had noticed throughout the time we have been away, for example there was the untidiest room award, the "I bought a silly hat" award, the "Where am I?" award etc. It was a really fun evening, but then the kids really surprised me by giving me a huge card they had all signed. It was in German (of course) and it said things like Thank you for believing in me even when I don't believe in myself - it reduced me to a snivelling heap. They asked me to translate the words into English for those who couldn't understand them, but I couldn't because I would really have burst into tears. They are SUCH lovely children. (Even if one did put his fist through a pane of glass tonight and another fell over a chair and broke the back-rest off.)

  12. OH PM what lovely sentiments. You are a teacher they will not forgot. OOPS ! Broken glass and broken chair - hope that does not translate to broken students !!!

  13. One lacerated knuckle from the glass, but I stopped the bleeding and he seems all right. The broken chair boy has bruised ribs but is otherwise fine. I told him to tell his Mum (whom I know quite well) that I had hit him across the chest with a big stick because he had annoyed me!

  14. It's 11pm here. I have quite an early start tomorrow and I still have to pack (how will I get that card into my small suitcase? - yes it really is that big!), so I'd better go up soon. Somehow I'm so tired I don't want to go to bed.
I might have another glass of wine instead.

    Posted 2 years ago by mollycat71 #

  19. Definitely not MC. You haven't heard some of the names I call the little sweeties when they can't hear. I think a saint that profane might get kicked out of Heaven PDQ.

  21. This is a trip you'll always remember PM. Isn't it amazing the wonders of the world and yet one greeting card is all it takes to reduce us to a blubbering, melted mess. That's beautiful. (((PM))) I'm sure those kids meant each and every sentiment they expressed. Well done dear! =)
