Just thought you might like another look at a weta. LOL. This is the giant weta, they are not the type we get around our homes, thankfully. Quite harmless but scary looking. Also beautiful in their own way too.

  2. We are having a huge grasshopper population this year, have to wonder if that is similiar to your weta season!

  3. We don't have a season SM, the weta are there all the time, hiding behind leaves and in nooks and crannies around the outside of the house. They may be more visible at certain times of the year, that's when they scare the he** out of you when you come face to face with one.
Do the grasshoppers cause any damage to your gardens at all? Or are they just an annoyance that happens annually.

  4. We have the grasshoppers all year too, but we see them more in the beginning of fall. They can cause problems in a garden. The got into one of my flower beds this year--played havoc with the plant! The spiders seem to love them though. We are having a large population of crickets this year as well. Some little Romeo was camped outside the front door. I heard him chirp for 3 hours straight and that was enough--even Deuter wanted a piece of him! Hubby sprayed and after another hour he grew quiet. Perhaps I should feel bad, but the crickets bring the spiders. Hubby had a leatherback tarantula up by the house. Our newspaper said that because of the recent rains we are to expect an awful large amount of insects. Like I said, hubby sprayed around the house.

  5. Spiders! Not keen on them but will tolerate some in the house as they deal to any flies that come in. Meegz has had a large(by NZ standards) spider living in her window frame and had grown very fond of it, she even considered taking it with her to the new flat. Eeekk! ! Thankfully she ran out of time and energy and left her behind. At least all my pretending to be brave in front of the girls whenever I saw a spider has meant they don't freak at the sight of them. I love the sound of chirping crickets but 3 hours of it could try my patience too. Spring has definitely sprung here, I was taking Mr MS to work early this morning just as the sun was rising and beside a main road there were several Pukeko (swamp hens) doing what comes naturally in Spring. Other drivers were laughing at the sight too.

  9. That is the podgiest weta I've ever seen. Could it be a pregnant female or has it just been eating too much barbecue recently ;-) (The *last* thing that weta needs is deep-fried butter, tee hee...)

  16. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!! If one of those got in the house I'm sure it would scare all the cats, even Dr. Fuzz! I'm sure there are bug lovers out there but I am NOT one of them!

  17. SB, Kiwi cats love wetas, they bring one in whenever they can find one... Then they tend to leave mangled bits of the poor things all around...

Posted 2 years ago by jcat #

  18. Oh! now I feel sorry for the wetas! I have seen what Dr Fuzz can do to a moth so i an't imagine what he and AO would do to a weta! Still gives me the reepy rawlies but then I am reeped out by bugs in general!
