The stretch of water is between the North & South Islands and is quite a dangerous stretch with tides ripping through there. I've crossed it in a large ferry in 7m(22ft) swells and believe me it was scary.

  2. It's one of the deepest straits of water in the world, isn't it, MS? One good wave and they would have been swamped and in the water...

  3. I see they were inspired by "Top Gear" the British motoring programme. Wikipedia describe Cook Strait as one of the most dangerous and unpredictable waters in the world. I have to admit that van looked incredibly stable considering.

  4. It's normally about a 3-4 hour crossing on a ferry. And apart from going by air this is the only way to get to the South Island. ie there is no bridge - not even the Sydney Harbour Bridge!

  5. So, is this TRUE or FALSE? By the way, check out the pix of MCW's visit to Chicago! We both said our dream is to come to visit our Kiwi friends! I really really want to meet you guys! It is a goal of mine to go to the UK next year and who knows? Maybe a trip to the UK is in order!

  6. Absolutely true, MC, we all saw the news coverage on TV, there was a television boat out on the strait with it, and it took them about 8 hours, I think. Oops, just reread the story -- 10 hours. And there's no handy islands for them to hop on once they're out in the middle of the Strait... Good ad for Toyota vans, don't you reckon?

  7. Totally true - and totally typical of Kiwi blokes to attempt this sort of thing!

  8. Krazy Kiwis! I love it!

  9. If you come to NZ we'll see if we can borrow the van to take you to the South Island! JCat will drive and I'll watch for dolphins and lighthouses. ;-)

  10. Ahhh, I think I'll take the ferry. They didn't say anything in that story about whether the van was seasick-proof...

  11. I think I might want to fly--or a large ferry that can handle the swells--I am a coward. The NZ version of extreme sports!

  12. Jcat, I did see a comment in an article that the support boat rocked more and the people wished they were in the van. Apparently the van was very stable :)

  13. Wow...That's so cool! The bidding should be interesting to watch. Right now it seems quite reasonable. =D

  14. When I come to NZ we are NOT doing this! LOL We will have an eating/talking fest like we did in Chicago with MCW

  15. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww MC, I was looking forward to a spot of relaxing fishing and chatting in the van. Was it the 'facilities' that put you off?

    Posted 2 years ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

  16. the facilities are a bit different! LOL

    Posted 2 years ago by mollycat71 #

  17. Yes they are, open air.

    Posted 2 years ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

  18. at least the air would clear out!

  19. "We made it and we didn't sink and we didn't get eaten by sharks".

Ha. Crazy Kiwis. Actually I know a few American guys who have also done really stupid and danerous things.
