  1. I've always given two weeks' notice, and I definitely will again. I'll see what they say - I'd really rather not stay another two weeks, but I will if I have to.

  2. {{{GD}}} If they did it to your friend, they'd do it to you, in a heartbeat, as soon as they felt you were no longer as useful to them as you are now. For what it's worth, I think you are doing the right thing.

AND I think it's appalling that you suspect you won't get that bonus you earned fair and square for the big deal you brought them in. I wonder, if they know you're upset, and they talk to you tomorrow in an effort to reassure you and get you to stay, if you can say something like, well, I'd feel happier about the whole situation if I'd been paid for my bonuses or we had my bonuses on paper -- something like that. Or if you say you're leaving to play tennis and they try to persuade you to stay with them, again, you say, well, I would be more inclined to stay if.... and again you bring up the bonus thing.

(Then, of course, as soon as you've got it, IN your bank account or IN writing that they owe it to you, you still quit.) It's not fair that they should get away with not paying you what they owe you. (And then you could do something nice for your friend too, with the money you wouldn't otherwise have had.)

I can't tell you, as a freelancer, the number of times I've been taken advantage of, not paid, not paid what I should have been, not paid when I should have been... and it was made easier for my 'employers' because I hated being hardnosed and even talking about money. Now, I think, I'm tired of being treated like that, I'll be as hardnosed as you would be, given the chance, but as diplomatically and in as nice a way as possible, so I don't burn any bridges. It's not like you're asking for anything you've not earned.

Loads of {{{HUGS}}} to you and to your poor friend.

  3. That makes a lot of sense, Jcat! I'd hate to lose the money they owe me. I have about ten other possible deals out there and the law of averages says one or two of those should work out as well. They're supposed to pay me for them, but since I'm quitting, I'll never know if those deals went through or not, so all I can do is hope they keep their word.
I think I'll mention quitting to play tennis and work at the gym and ten menion that it's not worth it to me to drive there every day for what I'm making. When they mention the bonuses, I'll mention the fact that I haven't seen any of that money yet and see what they say to that.

  4. GD, it just doesn't get better for you, dear lady, does it? I am so sorry to hear of your friends dismissal, but many words have been given to you and I have to agree. Give the 2 weeks, try to suck it up, and move forward. God has another plan for you, you don't know it yet, but I so believe he does. I have no advice, that hasn't already been given, but just to do the right thing in leaving this bad situation, and move on. Easier said than done, I know. But I have faith in you and your ability to make something of nothing. Know that we are here for you and I will say a prayer for your peace and comfort in the next couple of weeks. Call on us as you need to, we are here. Love you, Mama Lynn

  5. {{{GD}}} I hope they keep their word too but seeing as they haven't paid your friend for a statutory holiday, I think it's rational to assume that they probably won't.

So... keep the contact details of all the possible deals you think might come through. Just jot them in your notebook. (Probably wiser not to do anything on their computer.) Aren't you originating them anyway? so they're your contacts. And make sure you have a copy of contact details of the people involved in any future appointments you set. That way, even after you leave, you can still contact them and ask whether they committed to anything with your employers. They might not tell you ... but if your employers know you're following up, after you've left, it might help to keep them honest.

  6. (((Mama Lynn))) Thank you! Those are comforting words. That makes a lot of sense,Jcat - I'll make sure I take documentation with me of my contacts. And you're right, they had no scruples handling my friend today, so they'll probably avoid paying me what they owe if they can get away with it. If XBF doesn't get too disappointed in and mad at me over this, it would help me to have him on my side. I don't know how he'll react, though - I don't think he'll be happy, that's for sure.

  7. Stick by your guns on getting the bonus. Never Be Afraid To Ask For What You Want... as long as it's reasonable, and this most certainly IS.

  8. Before you mention quitting to anyone, tell the bosses that you have a big expense coming up and ask when to expect your bonus. See what they say. If they put a date on it, stay until after then. If they are evasive, ask for clarification on bonus payment schedule. Mention again that you have a big expense coming up and that you are having to pay out so much in gas just to get there that you need it as soon as possible. This establishes reasonable grounds for when you do leave.

  9. (((GD))) Sure hope this new company doesn't cheat you out of your bonus. KYKAT sounds spot on with gently inquiring and feeling them out for your expected bonus payment. They may have been 'working you' all along. This could help to force their hand in a way that appears to be completely innocent. I hate that we have a world where such strategies are necessary to get what is rightly ours. =(

  10. Well, I spoke to XBF this morning. He told me the lady got fired because they intercepted her emails and found she was the one who had spoken to one of the competitors. Who knows? I told him I want to quit. That I'm tired of making phone calls every day, tired of being tired, missing tennis and having no life. He was very understanding. He suggested he mention this to the boss first to see if we can work something else out - different hours and a different job here. Boss came and spoke to me briefly before he left for the weekend and told me he wanted to speak on Monday. Apparently they really want to keep me here and he said what he has in mind will work very well for me. I don't know what his plan is, but I'll find out on Monday I guess. I've got nothing to lose.

  11. I don't like having to wait til Monday to find out what'll happen at the new job, but I guess I'll have to. And the good thing is that if i don't like it, I don't have to take it.
Also - I did get paid for Labor Day - and for Tuesday when I wasn't there due to the dead car battery :)

  12. Glad you were paid correctly ! They had said before that they wanted to move you into a different position.. interesting how that was not brought up again until you voiced your dissatisfaction and desire to leave. Hear them out... if it's good for you to stay - stay. If not - there are options. And it seems they were able to replace your friend rather quickly. Best of luck whichever way you go. Only YOU know what's best for you.

  13. Thanks, 2p! I'll see what they have to say, for sure. If it's just different hours, doing the same kind of thing, I don't want it. I was pretty adamant with XBF that I just don't like this kind of job and am bored out of my mind. I also told him it's not worth the money they're paying me to miss tennis, drive as much as I do, and never have any time off.
The boss told me he will work with me so I'm happy - he says it may not be perfect for the company, but it'll be great for me. Don't know what that means!

The one good thing about staying would be keeping an eye on my bonuses. I mentioned to XBF that I wasn't making enough there, so I'm sure he brought that up with the boss, too.
