I have lived across the street from a huge cemetery for seven years. Within the cemetery is a pet cemetery. I was told that it was absolutely top notch and amazing. I went out for a walk this morning to clear my head as I was worried about Wilma. Something drew me to the cemetery today and I am so glad it did. It was the most awesome and amazing place. The pet portion is called "Rainbow Ridge" and has a "Rainbow Bridge". It has a small garden and headstones for all the pets and many firehydrants for the dogs. I was taken aback by how the pet owners had spiffed up the graves. There were shepherd's hooks with hanging plants, cat/dog toys, benches, statues, flags and all of them had a place to put a picture of the pets. I went around and looked at all the graves. Before I knew it I was bawling my eyes out because of two freshly dug graves. They were so little, one for a dog and one for a cat. They were both from the same family and died within a month of each other. There were wilting fresh cut flowers that the family had left. I went and sat down in the garden and felt a great peace about me, not sure what it was but it was really lovely. It was then I felt the closest I ever have to the Rainbow Bridge and the peace that all my past cats are well and waiting. I know it sounds crazy but I am going to continue to go back and sit in the garden. Does anyone else's community have a "pet" cemetery?

Ok, I'm bawling. I about did with the "I created you" story, but this pushed me over the edge. Wish our town did, don't think they do.

I haven't visited any but here is a site that lists locations of Pet Cemeteries in the US
http://www.nepanetwork.com/keepsakes/petcem1.htm
Maybe it will jog some memories for others to describe the sites.

We don't have any offical pet cemeteries in our area (that I know of). The only ones I've seen have been in the grounds of big manor houses or castles, usually in a nice quite wooded area. I'm always touched to see the permanent memorials to the cats, dogs, horses etc that the family have loved. I also find old human graveyards calming, and I enjoy visiting them, and reading the stones to learn those little bits about the people.

Wow, there's actually a pet bereavement counseling service here in town. I wish I'd known that 3 years ago.
That's soo neat that you went MC. I think it might make me too sad though.

Yes, there's a sort of family pet cemetery in a big manor house outside Dublin. It's beautiful, quiet and wooded like you say, Metsa. Pets from over generations of the family from the big house are buried there, from dogs and cats to ponies. It is sad reading the words on the stones, but comforting too. Those pets are not forgotten. I wish I'd thought of pet bereavement counseling too HM, last year. We tend to struggle through these things with our family and friends, don't we.

MC, our elderly cat, Moe--that we grew up with--is buried in a pet cemetery in Silver Spring, MD. The people who owned and operated it for many years had about 5 or more acres in what is now some of the most expensive Real Estate in the area, but their love of animals took over and they changed everything except the main house into this cemetery. It was lovely with large shade trees and a rolling ground. Well, they have long since passed away, and their heirs--either children or grand-children--saw the dollar signs of this property and tried to sell it. The State of Maryland stepped in and said no way--it is the same Hallowed ground as a people cemetery, there is a man buried there next to his horse, and in order to sell it, they would have to have the permission of EVERY person who has an animal buried there, and---pay for the relocation of the caskets--and most are actually in actual caskets--. Needless to say, it still exists to this day, and Moe is resting peacefully since 1970.

We have a very lovely pet cemetery here. It's so beautifully maintained and has beautiful statues throughout the grounds. They also have a crematorium on site and that is what we chose to do. I wanted my babies still home with us.
