   So, my dear little Nebula has started to poo and pee in me and my roommates rooms. She started doing this about a week or two ago, and it was just a bit at first, we would scold her and put her in her box, but now it seems she won't use the box at all. I tried keeping it very clean, and that didn't work. I have now changed the litter type we use, and nothing works. We have had to re wash our clothes and towls many times, because she'll hop up and poo or pee in the basket. We intensely cleaned the house and got all the clothes and papers off the floor, and she will still go and use the bathroom on the floor. Even right in front of us! I don't understand this behavior. She's also just seems disobedient in general lately. She'll hop onto the table when she has been trained for months now to stay off. I'll point and tell her get down like usually, but she'll look at me and moew or make clicking noises in frustration. I've tried spraying her, but she'll hop down and the second I walk away she'll hop back up. Just like the peeing and pooing.

   Has anyone had this problem? Do you have any suggestions?

   Bump!

   A few suggestions. Has Nebula been checked out by a vet? Sometimes they pee/poo out of the box because they have a UTI. Also, don't you have three cats? Experienced TDKers recommend one litterbox per cat and one extra in a multi-kittie household. Finally, there's something called Cat Attract that many TDKers swear by, sprinkle it on top of your litter, it's a bit pricey but you don't have to use much.

   You will probably also have to use an enzyme spray of some kind to get rid of the smell wherever she's already pooped/peed, since she will keep going back otherwise.

   PS The jumping back on the bench behaviour in front of you is normal -- you have a mischievous, naughty, stubborn kittie -- i.e. perfectly normal!

   Well the thing is with the disobediance, that she has not always been like this. Only the last two weeks or so, otherwise, they've all been perfectly mannered angels. =/ and also for months now they've been going in the same litter just fine. we like in a small apartment, there isn't really room for 3 or 4 litterboxes anyhow, and it's never been a problem for any of the multiple cats i've had ever before. i'll check out the thread, thanks guys. keep the suggestions coming.

   Has anything changed in your living situation? Food, roommates, new animals, stress? Sometimes a change in a cat's life disrupts its behavior. Please keep posting to let us know how she is doing.

   No there hasn't really been any changes recently. We got a new cat a month or so ago, but they are friends and she was fine for several weeks after we got her. She seems to only poop in me and my roommates rooms. we kept her out of the rooms last night and she didn't poop in the living room, but she did soil a towl that had fallen on the floor, even though it fell literally right next to the litter. I think she may have gone once in the litter too. I just don't know what to do with this crazy girl.

   My kitties went through a phase like this. Definitely have the little girl checked by the vet. If she's had any pain or discomfort when using the litterbox she may not want to use it now. Some kitties are not so good with the concept of cause-and-effect!

   Things that helped me:

   1. If the situation is really bad - put her in the bathroom with a litterbox. Make sure there is nothing on the floor - no rugs or towels. The litterbox should be the only comfortable space to dig around and "go". Make sure the litterbox has low sides and no lid. It's not punishment, so you can go in and play with her and she can have a couple small toys. Keep her in there until you have some evidence she is using the litterbox. My kitties started this way. They were feral and no concept of litterbox - so this introduced it. It took a couple days.

   2. The rule of thumb for litterboxes is #kitties + 1. There are kitties that get along great and share their boxes without any problem; but there are also kitties that don't share and have problems. My kitties play dog-in-the-manger with the litterboxes. One cat will "guard" a box and keep the other cat from using it. Also, one of the dears with wait and pounce on the other while she is using the box - forcing her to flee, peeing and pooping away. Maybe one of your cats has found a similar "fun" game to play, and is inhibiting your little girl's use of the box.

   3. Aluminum foil can be a great aid. My cats hated walking on it, and wouldn't pee on it. For awhile, I decorated the carpet with strategic strips - I blocked off all the alternate spots they tried to use, which meant they were "stuck" with the litterbox.

   4. Cats won't mess where they eat. My two had a chair they liked as an alternative to the litterbox - so I cleaned it well, and fed them their absolute favorite food there. OK, so the chair was still a bit messy, but it's better than having it pee and poop-ed on.

   5. When you clean the litterbox, leave a bit of poop behind -- just so there is no confusion about what all that lovely clean litter is for. Also, stay away from strong disinfectants - some cats are bothered by them.
