   Hello all,

   I was wondering if anyone had advice on how to help my two kittens get along better. I had one kitten for two weeks in which time she was able to get used to the apartment and such and she's doing amazing, or she was, until a couple of days ago when I got a gorgeous little kitten to keep my older one company, cause the first kitten seemed lonely as I am away for school half of the day. I was told that getting another kitten would help the first one with her lonliness issues.

   Well the second kitten was delivered to me, she is about two weeks younger than Izzy, and although they are starting to get along better (the first day, Izzy wanted nothing to do with the kitten, she hissed and growled at her and trie to take some swipes at her. I know this is normal, but she was getting a bit rough with the baby) well, it's been two days and Izzy is tolerating the kitten a bit better, she still hisses and growls and swats, but she also follows her around a bit and she can stand to be in the same room with the second one now.

   BUT! I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on how to help them get along a bit better? I separate them when I'm not here, but I don't want to have to do that forever, any suggestions on how to help?

   p.s. yes they have separate eating and litter stations as well as beds and there is plenty of space for them to get away from each other if they want to and there are a ton of toys here to keep them entertained. I just want them to get along better.

   I also give each of them individual cuddle time and am trying to play with them both at the same time, but Izzy keeps hissing and growling at Aerie, which makes Aerie afraid to be in close proximity to Izzy

   It is common for cats to hiss at one another when a new one is introduced. They are figuring out what the pecking order is. This is usually just posturing and doesn't result in injury. It is best to keep them separated for a while longer while you are gone. Supervise them when you let them into the same space. It won't take long for them to become best of friends or at least to work out a friendly division of territory. :)

   The update on the babies is as follows: I keep Aerie in a separate room then Izzy while I'm away, just to be safe, it's Aerie's little safe-room haha, which is actually just the empty spare bedroom in my apartment. When I'm here I let them out and about together and this morning, Izzy actually started attempting to play with Aerie, but Aerie is now trying to be the alpha female haha, despite the fact that she is a lot smaller than Izzy. Izzy tries to make nice and join in playing with Aerie, but Aerie will have hardly any of it, she hisses and spits at Izzy, but they seem to be doing a bit better this afternoon. They ran up to each other when I let Aerie out of her spare room and smelled each other a bit, but then Aerie just got mean and lashed out at poor Izzy, who promptly ran away growling.

   But they DO seem to be doing better a little at a time, like right now, they're playing with the same mouse toy, with only occasionaly hissing, running away and spitting. It's kind of entertaining to watch them interact actually haha.

   However, I do need to get Izzy a play tunnel, Aerie has an old plastic tube that she fits in like a charm, but sadly Izzy can't get past her shoulders in it, but she keeps trying. For now I tossed down a cardboard box for Izzy to use as a play tunnel, but Aerie has kind of taken it over and kicked Izzy out.

   wow! things are getting better by the minute. Right now Izzy AND Aerie are playing around the step stool I hvae, Aerie's under it and Izzy's on top of it and they are batting at each other playfully, WITHOUT hissing and growling! Although Izzy is making this strange rolling meow sound. I don't know what to call it, but it's like a friendly coo, but she's only doing it around the baby and she ISN'T in heat, she's not nearly old enough yet haha and she will be fixed before her first heating session ANYWAY. I'm going out on a limb here and saying that this behaviour is a good thing between the two of them. Am I right?

   My first two were just like you are describing. They hissed and growled and swatted and all, but then they became absolute best friends. I got another later on and they picked on her for a while, and now they're all three best friends. There isn't too much you can do to speed up the process, just let them take their time. It probably won't be more than a week before they're best buddies, rolling around on the floor wrestling eachother. No worries, just give it a bit of time. =)

   another update: the two of them are doing quite well, currently they are both sitting with me and purring happily. Izzy isn't offering to hiss and Aerie isn't offering to spit. so all is going well! Thanks so much for all of your comments!

   and now, a day later, they play together like litter mates, chasing each other around the house and tumbling across the carpet. I left the two of them alone in the apartment in the same room together when I went to run a half hour errand or so and when I came back they were cuddling with each other on my bed. I do believe that the worst of the getting along troubles are over and no it's just a matter of giving both of them lots of love and cuddles and they should be close friends in no time.

    they are, but Aerie's a brat and she steal's Izzy's food and kicks her out of the play tunnel that I got for Izzy haha. But they get along now at least, Aerie's just semi-evil heehee

    I was in the same situation, getting a new kitten after having my first for a month. They get along very well now, EXCEPT the older kitten is still very protective over his food!
