Yesterday my two kittens were having a routine microchip put in their necks. they are 15weeks old. boy and girl, hugo and molly. the lady came to my house to do the procedure and my kitten hugo died. we rused to the vet and they said the reason he died is because the lady injected the microchip into my babies spine. i am absolutly devestated. something that should of been straight forward and routine killed my kitten and the fact that the rspca have to do for company policy is aload of rubbish. the vet said that it was the ladies fault hugo died as she didnt do the procedure right. I am so upset not only that hugo has died and i am left with a molly who is pining for him but also that i had to witness my kitten have a fit and be in soo much pain while i could do nothing. What are the chances of this happening and what would you do in my position?

How horrible. Poor lil Hugo. Was this lady a vet or a tech or what? Did she apologize to you? Is she accepting the resonsiblity of what she's done? Surely she did't mean for this to happen but it seems like such a rare thing. I would be looking into her certifications and training. Is there such thing as malpractice(sp?) for vets? I think you have every right to be mad, I sure would. I'm so sorry, RIP lil Hugo.

she was just a worker from the rspca. she wasnt a vet. the vet i took the kitten to took xrays and it had a postmortem and it all confirmed thats why hugo died because the microchip when into his spinal cord. The rspca have taken full responsibility but we havnt heard from anyone to appoligise or make sure im ok. the lady that did it said sorry and everything but nobody has rang to make sure im ok afterwards. im just annoyed. i know nothing i do will bring him back but cant get my head round how the hell she managed this? its routine and should not of been anywhere near the spinal cord??? Thanks for all your messages its much appreciated... i duno whether i should find another kitten for molly to play with because thats why we got two so they wouldnt be lonely and we didnt want them splitting up.

Lucy you have my heartfelt condolences on losing your beautiful, sweet little Hugo. Truly I do not understand how this could have happened. Sending prayers to you and Molly for strength and courage. By all means...give yourselves a little mourning time but definitely bring home another sweet kitty for Molly's companionship. The shelters are overflowing with so many homeless babies these days and Hugo would want you to take one into your life to love and care for. RIP Sweet Hugo.

oh Lucy, Im so very sorry!! I can't believe that such a routine thing, can go so horribly wrong. Hope fully you can report it to the proper people, and have only certified people perform the procedure, and never ever have such a tragedy happen again. I cannot express how sorry I am for you and Molly.

I am so sorry. This outrages me so i cant even imagine how you feel. I know how helpful microchips can be but someone who is doing even the most rutine procedure should know how to do it so awful things like this dont happen. I think that a good way for you to get over this could be to get another kitten for molly. It is your decision, but I think it will help you deal with the death of hugo and help you focuse taking care of your one remaining and healthy kitten and maybe a new friend for her. I know there will never be a replacement for hugo, but he is now in kitten heaven playing with other new friends.

This happened because an unqualified person was doing the procedure, and did it tragically wrong. The RSPCA should make certain that any of their workers who do this have been thouroughly trained by licensed veterinarians to perform it correctly.
I'm so sorry about sweet Hugo. This should not have happened.

This is a terrible awful shame!! Poor little thing, and now Molly has to go through life without her brother. I say get another kitten to help both you and her get over the loss. Nothing like a house-full of kitties! I agree with everyone else here - it was their fault and should reimburse you for the microchip and loss of life. Hugs to you both.

This is absolutely unbelievable and scandalous. The RSPCA must answer to this. Micro-chipping is a surgical procedure and should ALWAYS be carried out by a professional vet, as the loss of your sweet innocent Hugo has shown so tragically. And how horribly ironic that an organisation which professes to be about caring for animals has allowed a situation like this where pain and death has been needlessly inflicted on a kitten. This is what they are supposed to be PREVENTING. You must take this further, for Hugo's sake, and for the sake of all the kittens at risk from cowboy paramedics like this woman. I am in shock reading your story.

I feel so bad for you right now, this is heartbreaking!! Sending a virtual hug ! I have never heard of this happening before!! The person and the company they represent needs to be held responsible!!
This needs to be a story that people hear loud and clear, the information currently available about micro-chipping does not say this is even a possibility! I would go as far as calling your local news and asking them to do a story about what has happened to poor Hugo!!
Again I am truly sorry for your loss!

You need to report this ASAP before she kills another kitten. This should only be performed by a licensed vet. Please honor his memory by getting another homeless kitten for Molly.

Lucy, welcome to TDK, I'm so very, very sorry it's under such tragic circumstances. This certainly needs following up with the RSPCA, and I'm appalled they've made no effort to contact you and apologise properly / explain why this happened. At the absolute least this woman should be suspended and/or stopped from carrying out this procedure, and for your own peace of mind you need to know that's happened, and they need to urgently review their operating methods.
I don't know how much help I can be, but I am an associate member of the RSPCA by virtue of a monthly donation, so may be able to give you a name further up the ladder if you have no acceptable response from the local branch. Let me know if you think I can help, we can swap email addresses and take it from there.
In the meantime, yes, Molly needs a playmate, it will help her not miss Hugo quite so much, and the sooner the better before she gets too used to being an only cat. Can I recommend The Cats Protection League? I think steering away from the RSPCA in this instance would be a good idea...unless you paid an adoption fee for two kittens, in which case they owe you one, in blunt terms, and should be falling over themselves to sort this whole situation out.

I am so sorry for your loss! My babies were both microchipped by my vet! Do not let this effect your future options of chipping just use it as a horrible and heatbreaking experience to only allow your vet to do any sprt of injections!
