Kitten won't sleep at night

  1. I have a kitten who is a little over 3 months. He is our first and only kitten in the apartment. We have had him for 12 days now. My problem is our kitty wont sleep through the whole night. Every night ranging from 2-4 in the morning he will wake up and do one of the following: munch on my hair, lick my ear, play with his toys on the floor, or I will wake up and he is just staring at me real wide eyed on the head board (funny by creepy lol). Every single night when he does this we throw him out of the bedroom and close the door, and he doesn't make one sound and goes right to sleep in the living room.

I understand that cats are nocturnal, but I have also heard that they will get used to a humans sleep schedule. I have already tried playing with him about an hour before bed to wear him out and no luck. I can't feed him on a schedule because we leave his food out all the time so that doesnt work. I have tried many "tricks" and none seem to work. Maybe I have just not given it enough time. How long till a kitten settles down and sleeps through the night? I am hoping that we arent teaching him bad habits by throwing him out every night when he wakes us up.

  2. Hi Amber, welcome! Is that your kitten in your avatar? What a cutie! What's his name?

I'm going to let others chime with advice, but just wanted to say hi and your kitty is totally, 100% normal. I guarantee you'll get lots of good advice here.

  4. Kittens and cats rarely sleep through the night - it's just not in their make up to do so.

If you want him to have access to the bedroom (and you) during the entire night you might try putting his toys in the other room. When he wakes you up, take him to his toys and then go right back to bed. Eventually he'll learn that he can go out and play then come back in and sleep with you but that he's not going to get away with munching on you.

  5. Emery is adorable, looks (and acts) a lot like my kitten. We have the same sleeping problem, he tends to go to bed with us around 10:00 and wakes up at different points throughout the night (1:00 and 4:15 are his favorite times!) Sometimes we will feed him and that can sometimes help get him back to bed. I used to wake up at 4:30 and give him playtime until he got tired again. But I couldn't handle it anymore and we got another kitten to keep him company in the middle of the night. Good luck!

  6. Mine two kits are 2 and 6 years old. I KNOW they don't sleep through the night because of the toys I find in bedroom in the morning that were not there when I went to bed. Apparently, I just sleep through their nocturnal adventures.
