We received Barney a week ago, he is baby not even old enough to be away from mommycat. We are hand raising him with love and M, my finace is in love, as I posted earlier this week. He wants to change his name. I don't really like the new name but its not my kitten to name, so my real question is... Is this ok? Kitty wont know the difference right? (He doesn't respond to his name more than any other word you say to him,)

Leela's name was Lacy from the time she was brought to the shelter in May till we adopted her in late June. No problems.

As long as you are feeding him, I don't think he will really care! ;)

Fred was called Zorro in PetSmart when my mom got him..he was about a year or so, and she changed it to Fred and not a problem...not to mention we always call him Bubby which he also knows...

each of my cats have a different tone of voice i say their names with. im not even sure they can tell the difference of their names, just the tone of voice haha. im sure it wont matter much, cats dont care too much about names unlike dogs who really recognise it. and barney wont even remember because hes so young. best of luck with your little kitten!

T.S. Elliot wrote a delightful poem about the naming of cats:
The Naming Of Cats by T. S. Eliot
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

I think your kitten will adjust to his new name just fine, SB. :)Posted 2 years ago by Kitten Whisperer #
