What kind of food is best for my girls?

(16 posts)
  1. hey all, it's me again, and I am glad to report that Izzy and Aerie are getting along just like litter mates, even though they aren't, so I'm a happy kitty mommy.

However, I have a few questions about what I should feed the girls, obviously kitten formula, but what brand is best?

They get both dry and wet food as well as a bit of whiskas kitten milk every morning and night. They love the kitten milk and it agrees with their tummies much more than 1% milk, which I had to give them yesterday cause I was out of kitten milk and they were expecting it.

When I took Izzy to the vet, she reccomended Iams kitten formula because I had just been feeding them the store brand kitten food. I did buy a small bag of the Iams to see how they like it and while Izzy quite enjoys it and hoovers it up, Aerie just tried to cover it over haha. She did taste a bit of it and she seemed okay with it, but I had mixed the food with the store brand that I usually buy so she decided to eat more of that and only a few nuggets of the Iams.

So yes, Izzy likes the Iams, and Aerie will eat it, but she prefers the store brand. But here's the issue, Iams is so friggen expensive and although I would do anything for my girls, if only one likes the Iams, I don't want to keep buying it.

SO! here's my question: What brands do you guys feed your babies and what do you reccomend to keep them happy and healthy, and within my budget haha, cause I can't afford to buy the expensive stuff from the vet all the time.

As far as wet food goes, give me your opinions on that as well please! I am currently feeding them "special kitty" pouches, dividing a pouch up between the two of them every afternoon, but it doesn't agree with Aerie even though she loves it so much, it smells like a toxic waste dump in the litter box when she finishes her number two haha.

Any opinions would be awesome! thanks!

  3. dry food is the worst thing to feed a cat
    wet food is much better
    raw is the best

    dry food that are good:

Wellness CORE, EVO, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, Natural Balance

wet foods: any wet food is better than none. if you can afford it feed the same brands as the above listed dry. else sophistacat is good and if you get the right cans it is grainfree and doesn't have by-products as the first ingrediant.

raw: the best thing to feed cats. this post: http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/20534 helps explain it a lot.

I think that any food with grains is basically junk. the soy in the food you are feeding = stinky litterbox. I base my belief on grains = junk on the fact that cats are obligate carnivores, they can't digest grains. They are designed to and meant to eat meat. That is why I feed raw.

  4. yes, but Aerie can't eat much wet food or it gives her an upset tummy, she's fine on dry food, but when I give her wet, things go downhill and I'm left cleaning up messes and poor little Aerie is left feeling under the weather.

I'm just wondering what kinds of brands of food that people have tried that their kitties like and that are easier on the tummy for the kittens.

  7. guys, i'm from south africa, so i have no idea what kind of brands you guys have in the usa, but whith my hand reared babies i always use royal canin's baby cat range. they have formula, which i will swear by forever, the quality of the milk is superior to anything else we have available here. then they have a thing called baby cat mousse - its a very soft, mousse-like meat that can actualle be mixed into the formula and fed with a bottle. i love this because babies can actually drink A LOT when they get past 3 weeks, and it's a good way of getting more calories into them and ease them onto solid food. the next thing they have is baby cat 1st age, it's like dried minced meat, very fine crumbs, and then obviously after that you can move them on to regular kitten food. the range is expensive, but i believe you can lay a very good foundation for your cat in terms of the future health of their liver, kidneys, and the calcium content of their bones. once they're past the kitten stage you can try them on whatever else suits you.

  8. There are big debates about raw food versus dry and wet. I have had friend with cats fed on dry for years and they lived long and healthy lives. My vet cautions against raw food. My friend's vet is all for it.

Right now I feed a mix of dry and wet. Dry food I feed GO! (which has no perseratives and only avialable in Canada I think) and Evo from Innova. Wet food I feed the Wellness. Which was recommended by the Shelter I adopted her from. I also have fed Medical which you can only get from the vet but its kind of hard to get to the vet to buy her that food all the time!

  10. Most of you know that I am very pro raw food. I can not in good conciese feed my cats dry food. My reason is that raw is what cats are designed to it; it gives them the best optimal health and life. Cats can be fed dry food and appear fine but you don't know what is happening inside of them. Feeding raw is at most the cost of a high quality dry food and about 1/3 of the cost of feeding a high quality wet food. To me it is so worth while seeing my little carnivores eating what they are supposed to and reaping all the health benifits that cats don't get on commerical diets.

Below is a link of a cat who is fed all dry...scroll down a little ways and you'll see that there is a ton of fat around the kidneys. That is extremely unhealthy, cats fed the natural diet don't get that:

  11. Ya its very odd, on the ocassion I have had to feed Sophie dry..I was out late. she doesn't touch wellness dry at all.but wet she's all over.

  12. It is kinda odd. However Wellness dry has also had it share of problems even though it hasn't been recalled...so it is probably for the better.

I can't give Milo any dry since he has CRF though he does get freeze dried chicken treats after he gets his fluids. Mikey does get some dry but I am glad he gets at least 50% wet. Milo and Mikey are our housecats and my parent's just don't get my reason behind hating dry food.

  16. update on the food situation. Aerie has grown used to the Iams and Izzy adores it, but the store was sold out of Iams kitten last time I was there so I got them a small bag of purina kitten chow. they both love it and they get canned food once a day and Aerie's tummy has grown used to the canned food and I am happy to report that the litter box is not as stinky as previously haha, in fact, I barely realize that I have a litter box until it comes time to clean it out. I'm thinking of sticking with the dry food and alternating between purina and Iams and I'm sticking with the friskies brand of wet food that I have been giving them. They also get dental care treats on a dialy basis and Aerie is still crazy about that kitty milk so I continue to give that to them. But now I'm terrified about Tuesday cause Izzy's going to get spayed...my poor baby is going under the knife and quite frankly, I'm terrified.
