  2. Even sicker: Us humans eat it, too.

  3. It would be nice if this site actually cited their resources used to come up with this information. Without it, we have to take their word for it and there isn't a way to check up for ourselves how much of it is true and how much of it is sensationalist journalism written with the sole purpose of riling people up.

  5. there are plenty of sources that also say the same thing.

  7. Ugh, where's the vomit bag? It's worse than even I imagined. Just another signpost of the times we are living in. I hadn't counted on the styrofoam wrapping, or the rancid grocery store meats. Disgusting. Revolting. It confirms my decision to go raw, just as soon as I can get the proper ingredients together. At present I'm unable to find a calcium phosphorus tablet, or even phosphorus on its own, so I can't make a raw food recipe. So, I bought another bag of Purina cat chow today, because until I can do it right, there's no point trying to feed raw food.

  9. You've decided not to go the Instincts route then Mojo?

  10. why not try feed bones? else you can use eggshells, I'll have to find back where I found that so you can figure it out.

I didn't feed bones for about a month when starting to try feed raw. However they were only getting 1/3 of their total food raw at the point. My way to feed commerical with raw was to feed raw and wait an hour to feed any wet food. then wait another hour before feeding dry. sure, it took a while in between feeding but since that is how it worked out that's how I did it. Also, they never got fed twice a day, just once to prevent salmonella.

  11. Eleniki, not at all: I probably will try Instincts, but I'd also like to try making a raw food recipe before I get that. I really would prefer not to keep my cats on a conventional diet ONE MORE DAY, but you can't just switch over to raw meat without considering their nutritional needs, and I know I don't have the time, energy or wherewithal to do the Frankenprey approach that Furryfriends has discussed.

  12. The only potential problem with instincts is that the powder becomes a paste when mixed with water as directed, then you mix it in with the raw meat. Cats seem either to love the taste of the paste (better with the liver powder added) or hate it. Sumi loves it, can't get enough; miso doesn't, though we're getting there, with various little encouragements and aids...

  13. Have you tried sprinkling Parmesan cheese over the top for Miso? I found that when mixed raw chicken with Parmesan cheese my cats both liked it a lot.

  14. hmmm...I'm reluctant to give them dairy, Mojo. Though I suppose it would be only temporary. We're making some progress - today miso ate fairly well, with a tiny taste of her old food smeared on each piece of chicken. She got the instincts mix into her too, which is a relief. She actually looked for more afterwards, also a relief, as she's lost 4oz since we started this, 4 days ago, which is a fair enough percentage of an 8 and a half pound cat. She could do with losing a bit more though, but I don't want it to happen too quickly. I'm a bit afraid of fatty liver disease with her, which is why I gave her a good meal of her old food when she refused to eat anything the other night.

  15. Why are you reluctant about dairy? I've found every cat I've had has loved cheese. Not that it's been a regular part of their diet, but I don't see why it would be bad, especially at the beginning to get them into raw food.

  16. Just based on the general intolerance of lactose foods most cats show. But a little won't harm them, specially as a transitional treat. Not sure if miso even likes cheese - she's never had it!

  17. My cats go nuts over cheese -- all four of the cats I've had. I'm willing to bet there's darn few cats anywhere that don't like cheese. I'm talking cheddar, jack, and now parmesan.
