  1. hi there

my name is rhian i am from derby england. me and my b/f have recently got a new kitten his name is oakley and he is 12 weeks old. we got him from our local cats protection centre 2 weeks ago. We found this forum as we were worried about how little water oakley drinks and were looking for some info which we found. i thought i would register as it is good to know we have somewhere to turn if we ever need any advice and just to share our lovely kitten with others who love animals too

  2. Welcome Rhian... this is the fluffiest place on the net. Please, set up a gravatar of your kitty - we'd love to see him! Many create a catster page as well.

  3. Welcome to TDK Rhian!! As far as how much water he is drinking that can vary. Does he eat wet or dry food? You can check to make sure he is not getting dehydrated, click the link below for instructions. If you believe he might be please call your vet ASAP.

  5. do you feed wet or dry food? wet has lots of moisture and is much healthier to feed than dry which has little.

cats don't have a high thirst drive and get dehydrated even if they are healthy when fed dry. if you are feeding wet than not drinking much water there is no problem.

  6. 2bpurring thanks for the info. my b/f found a topic on here about water when he looked last night. oakley is on wet food so now we are not to worried about it we just found it strange that he would drink kitten milk so quickly but we wouldn't see him drinking water very often

  7. Hi Rhian, welcome to TDK! So nice to have another Brit TDKer join in, especially one so local (I'm just down the A52 from you!!!).

If Oakley is eating mainly/all wet food, his water intake won't be that high, but if you have him on dry food then he should be drinking more. Try offering him more opportunities to drink, have a number of water bowls around the house. For some reason water bowls by food aren't always popular!

We have this problem with our Eric, he is very prone to UTIs (urinary tract infections) and we have to keep his water intake quite high. The multiple water bowls idea has worked for us, although the daft creature still loves the manky flower pot in the garden best (!!). You could also look into getting one of the pet drinking fountains.

Look forward to hearing more about Oakley!

  8. Hi Rhian! It's a good idea to have a kitty's water dish in a different place than their food. Once we separated water from food, our kitties drank more water. We have a water bowl near the front door, and a second one in the bathroom. Both get used by both our kitties. They seem much happier to have the food in a different place.

  14. Sio. thanks for your post about a water dish not near the food. I did not know this but Sammy and Oliver prefer to drink out of a bowl on a counter in the batheroom. I finally got them their own bowl as they would drink water left in the glass, as I liked to bring a glass of ice water into the bedroom and get up and drink it during the night. That's when I noticed they like a drink too. I thought maybe they were just different. Thanks again Sio.

    BTW welcome Rhian!!
