Hi I'm samye and I just adopted a new kitten. I'm not sure if it's male or female yet because every time I go to look it protests. (it's shy) Anyhoo I usually say she just cuz I'm used to girl kitties. She's the youngest I've had (only about 4.5 weeks old) and hurt herself pretty bad the 3rd day I had her. She fell off the back of the couch and hurt her neck, so she has to wear a brace for a while till it heals. If it's a girl (for sure) I'm naming her Nova and if it's a boy my boyfriend is insisting on the name Spartan. Either way it's the cutest kitty out of the litter, the only one that wasn't black. (She's a dusty gray color with points on her ears, paws, and tail) I'm just here to hear kitty stories and learn tips on taking good care of her :)

Welcome to TDK Samye and congratulations on finding us. Just ask any kitty question you want and there will be someone who can help answer. As AZDEB said sometimes it's quiet here and sometimes it's busy. The vet will help you find out what gender your kit is so just ask next time you are there. Poor wee baby, hurt it's neck, 'she' sounds delightful.

thanks for the welcome everyone :) She's such an attention getter, she doesn't stop meowing no matter what I do unless she's in my lap or my bf's! And he keeps saying how much he hates cats, but it makes me smile when he's got her up on his shoulder, asleep peacefully :D

There's nothing quite like a male who claims to hate cats but becomes all soft around a wee kitty.

i think it's just cus he's had bad experiences with kitties, he was playing with his favorite cat when he was little and his dog came up and ran off with it :'( but he seems to like our little one enough :) except when she tries to climb up in his lap and uses excessive claws lol :D

Yeah she eats just fine! and she's just gotten her hyper kitten legs! she just came bolting out of the bathroom (where her litter box is) and scared the crap outta me!!! and I really think the crying is just because she wants to be with us, she knows where her food, water, and box are so she just wants us to remember she's here (who could forget!!) she's playing with my shoes just now...little goofball!!

Hey, a friend told me a good way to tell if it's a male or female it worked on my kitten. I never herd it before but might as well give it a shot. She told me if you pick it up from the back of the neck if her tail flips between the legs it's a female, if it flips and curves up it's a male. Could be an old wives tale.
LOL my kitten does the same thing, she likes to climb up our entire body to get to the top of our back. It kinda doesn't feel good but it's cute so i'll put up with it till she gets bigger lol.
hope this helps :)

Welcome to TDK, Samye! Here is a website that gives great information about determining the sex of a kitten. I hope you continue to enjoy your new furbaby. :)

I think she left it out, Samye. The best way I can describe it is that all cats (and animals) have two little -- hmmm -- holes/organs on their little backsides. If the two holes are close together, it's a female. If they're quite far apart, it's a male. Let me see if I can find a website to help.
Try this illustration: http://www.pawsonline.info./ I really do find it easier to go by the space between...
