Filthy but healthy kitten?

  1. Ok, since I haven’t had an indoor cat since I was a little kid, I really don’t know what to expect. I’ve had Shadow for about 2 weeks now and I’ve figured out the food thing, I just haven’t been able to implement it because I’ll have to buy it without my hubby (he’ll protest at the cost I am sure). But besides that, I’m just not sure if he’s all healthy and whatnot.

He doesn’t seem to sit when he, um, takes a dump, nor does he seem to be covering it up, though he does with number one. He’s only 5 months, and I’ve heard that they learn these things from other cats, but he was with his bother until we got him, and it seems they were kept with their mom long enough. His poo absolutely reeks, and I assume it’s the food, but even with better food, what can we do about the smell? We got Arm and Hammer litter that seems to help a lot with the ammonia smell, but the other smell is just taking over our house, even though I clean it every day.

The other thing, besides not sitting or burying his poo, is that he doesn’t seem to clean up afterward. It’s not that I want to see it, but in the two weeks that we’ve had him, I’ve never seen Shadow lick/clean his butt. I keep having to do it for him so it doesn’t get all over. I read that if I did so, he would eventually figure it out and do it himself, but so far he’ll clean ever where else but there. I wouldn’t want to lick my own butt, so I don’t blame him, but isn’t it a cat thing to do? I’ve wondered if there was something wrong with it (his behind), but again, I don’t know much about it. It doesn’t seem to hurt him to go, and I don’t think his butt is red or swollen. I’ve read that kittens often have worms, but he doesn’t show any of the symptoms. Could he still have them, though, and would it hurt to give him meds just in case? I can’t just run off to the vet simply because I don’t know what a healthy cat’s butt looks like, so I’m trying to figure all this out. Sorry for the second long post. Thanks for helping us out!

  2. Ah, the joys of litter-issues.

Does your boy crouch when he poos? Or is he standing up straight? The first would be normal, the second less so.

I have two kitties - one spends hours burying her poo. She rakes litter all around the litter box, sometimes so enthusiastically that she pushes it (litter AND poo) out of the litter box. The other kitty cannot be bothered to bury anything. It sounds like your kitty shares this philosophy. I call it the "my-sh!t-don't-stink" attitude. Litters with "activated carbon" seem to help. If it is really noxious you have two options: 1. Scoop each time he goes (you should scoop daily, anyway); or 2. Cover it for him. Who knows? He might learn from you.

I don't know about the cleaning the butt issue - occasionally both my kitties need a little help with it. Does he have diarrhea? That can be difficult for a kitty to clean. You might want to consult the vet.

  3. Yup, some cats don't bury, smelly little sods!! We keep a supply of cheap sceneted nappy sacs by the tray and scoop out the poo as soon as we can after a cat has performed - means we don't have to change the litter as frequently, and helps with the whiffy problem!

  4. LOL! A "whiffy problem" it is!

Since I am (still) trying to find employment, I'm home most of the day so I can clean the litter quite often. When, and if, I find a job, that won't be an option, so I sure hope he grows out of his smelly, my-sh!t-don't-stink, habits!

Shadow doesn't seem to crouch at all, he stands with his behind in the corner. I'm glad my husband thought to get a box with a side-cover, because if we hadn't a lot of it would probably end up on the floor. I guess it could be worse...

I've been wondering if maybe he has diarrhea, and that's why. He's certainly not constipated, but it doesn't seem, well, runny either. I figured since it was in the middle of the two that it was probably normal. All the things I didn't realize I was going to need to know before getting a cat!

  5. Hmmm, consistency sounds fine (aren't poo conversations fun!) but not sure about the standing up virtually straight bit. Does he seem to strain at all? Or act oddly around the time he uses the tray? I'm hoping some other TDKers come & comment/advise, I've not come across this problem before. I'll try and steer some in your direction!

  6. Thanks for your help! No, he doesn't seem to have a hard time at all, and he doesn't exhibit any strange behaviours about it. He does like to go whenever we are eating, which is just so nice of him since the laundry room is next to the kitchen, and he also thinks he needs to go whenever I'm in the middle of cleaning his past "gifts." I'd say that he maybe prefers going when we're close by, but by the amount that quickly accumulates in the litter box, he must be doing it when we're not around, also.

  7. Oh, that just made me laugh! My kitties "redecorate" the litter pan as soon as I clean it too. Litter cleaning is a social event - I work, and they watch and wait impatiently for their turn.

One of my kitties is like your guy - fond of the corner of the litter box. Because of this, I need to have lids on litterboxes. The other kitty likes to feel the breezes caressing her behind as she goes. She carefully digs around in the litter, then sticks her tail end outside the box and goes. Then she scrapes the litter around in the box and looks perplexed that this does not cover the (outside the box) poo. Sometimes she figures out the problem, and scrapes litter out of the pan to cover her mistake. Litter boxes in my house must sit on a nice big sheet of plastic.

I've noticed my girls tend to need to use the litter after they've had dinner. Is it possible that this is happening when your guy poos at supper? you could try altering his feeding schedule and see if it alters the pooing schedule.

  8. if you notice, dogs "go" after eating. it's a biological thing and kitties have the same sort of mechanism.

  9. Human babies "do it" too! LOL
