Can kittens/cats have separation anxiety?

  1. In the last week I noticed when I leave the condo, even to do something simple like take out the trash, Mowgli goes to the front window and cries! When the window is open you can hear him outside(you can hear him about 10 car lengths away, that is about how far the trash bins are)

I thought it was just an isolated deal but he seems to be doing it more and more. This morning when Mike left for work at 5am, Mowgli tried to follow dad out the front door! He has never tried to escape. Then he runs from the back door to his window climbed the screen to the top crying like he was hurt going back and forth between the windows like a crazy kitten! It took me an hour to calm him down. The same thing happened this afternoon when I left to run to the grocery store, even with the window closed I could hear him outside.......when I got home he was super talkative and all over me.

Can cats feel separation anxiety? How do I deal with this, what would cause this to start happening ?

  2. He sounds like he might do well with a playmate. If it's possible, adopt a kitty to keep him company.. Otherwise leave a TV or radio on when you leave. Get him stimulating toys, and always reassure him that you'll be home soon when you leave.

  3. He has his brother, Tommy.
Tommy is a big nut, he follows Mowgli around, Mowgli runs the show even though he is half Tommys size.

Really this just started happening in the last week but it is concerning ! When Mike got home tonight Mowgli was all over him, talking up a storm. He makes this pitiful call like he is hurt, but hes fine I think he just misses his daddy? I just don't know why he would start doing this ?

  4. Did you guys recently change your schedule?

How old are the kitties? When they are young they go in and out of stages, it might just take some time to pass.

  5. Kitties definately can have separation anxiety. Once when we were selling our house and had seven cats we decided to board four of them for a month so non-cat lover potenial purchasers would not be frightened of so many kitties. Well Missy missed my hubby so much she stopped eating anything, she lost weight and was sickly, the boarding facility called and insisted we take her home, they thought she was dying. Once home she dove into the food and was perfectly fine, she had just missed my hubby that much.

  6. Tommy Tiger and Mowgli are about 5 months old, the shelter wasnt sure when we took them all in to adopt and that was in May.

No changes to the schedule recently. However, about a month ago we moved them from Mikes house to my condo, but they were fine with the move. If anything they have more windows and more space here to play.

It just has me worried because I go back to school on Tuesday so they will be alone during the day again.

  7. My little Luna cries when my son goes to school, but slowly she's getting adjusted. I guess "I can't go to school because my cat will miss me too much" isn't a good excuse.

  8. You can try Feliway difuser or collar? It mimicks the horomones and smell mothers release to calm their kitties? My vet usues it in her office :)
