A question of digestion

(4 posts)
  1. I'm hoping Furry Friends will answer me a few questions! My girls, miso and sumi, have been on a raw diet for ten days now. All is well, except sumi seems never to get enough to eat. I am feeding her approx. 6oz of meat per day and she only weighs 5 and a half lbs!! Miso is making the transition well now, but I have run out of the pre-mix Instincts powder and so yesterday and so far today I have only given them plain meat, no added supplements. I think this is fine until the post arrives with the powder but in case it doesn't, I'd like to give them a good feed of the high-quality organic commercial food I detailed for you before. On other raw websites, people are not nearly so concerned about the digestion time of raw versus commercial - some of them even feed commercial in the morning and raw in the afternoon and evening, when they've more time to prepare! They say this works well for their kits, and that you can be over-cautious, that in the wild, cats often bury their prey and come back to eat it when it's gone off a bit, with zero ill-effects (though we can't know that, can we..) Some feed their cats a mixture of raw and commercial during the transition, and some continue to do that as their regular diet!
miso and sumi have now not pooped since the day before yesterday. While I know that a raw diet involves less eliminating, I am wondering how this fits into the digestion scheme of things - surely it means that saturday's raw food is still sitting in their little guts, and surely this means that bacteria can grow if it's sitting there so long?
I would welcome your input FF, and anyone else who has an opinion on this!

  3. sorry, I was studying for a spanish quiz so couldn't answer this earlier.

I choose just to be very careful with feeding raw, I don't at all want to risk salmonella.

I think that it is safe for them to not have pooped for a while since after the food goes through their stomach it is so processed and the bacteria should be all killed that there is little risk. If you want them to eliminate more give them a tiny bit of raw veggies as that is just going to go straight throw them causing them to eliminate more. just do something like 5% veggies.

Personally I'd say it is safe to feed just plain meat for a few days. If you can get some liver/kidney get some and just try frankenprey style and see how it goes over. Bones if you don't want to feed them you can use eggshell powder.

An egg is a pretty complete meal if you feed the egg yolk raw, cook the egg white, and then make the eggshell into powder.

To make eggshell powder get enough eggshells to make it worth while. Rinse them out and stick them in the over for 8-10 minutes @ 350F. Grind them with a coffee grinder/food processor.

  4. Ok, just did that FF!!! I gave them a tiny teaspoon of powdered eggshell each, mixed in with egg yolk and meat. I left the egg white out for now, but will cook it later and give it to them in a bit more meat. Gracias! Que tu espanol vaya bien!
