Kitten first-time owner with lots of questions :)

(10 posts)
  1. Hello there! So it is my first time owning a cat (my sister is allergic to cats and now she's moved away) and i have couple of questions for ya!
Oh, before I start, let me briefly introduce my precious "Nyang"! She is now about 12wks-old, pure white domestic(i assume)short-hair cat. Her name is derived from a cat meowing sound in Korean language, 'Nya-ong'.

    1. she would not drink water! I've read that a cat does not need much water if it's eatting canned foods, but she wouldn't even dip her tongue in the water bowl.. I also brought her to the bathroom and tried if she would taste dripping water, but she got very frightened and ended up jumping on top of my head..lol any good ideas? or should I just keep hydrating her with milk instead?

    2. She recently developed this behavior of licking and suckling on my hand and arm before she goes to sleep. I've read that she's grooming me as she would've done to her mom. But it said suckling behaviour might be caused by her dietary problem, which i'm now concerned with.. hmm. I don't mind her licking me all day except her drools being all over my hand...haha. Any good methods to stop this behavior?

    3. When I first brought her home, I bought both canned foods and (cheap)Purina kitten dried food. Because she's been barely eatting dried foods, I've been giving her one can a day with a bowl of dried food aside just in case canned food runs out. But then I've read that cans can be given only twice a week.. What can I do to make her eat more dried food?

I guess 3 questions are enough for now. haha.
Thank you very much for reading, and for answers in advance!!

  2. Hi, Nyang, welcome to TDK! I am sure lots of experienced kitty foster mums will jump in soon, when the US wakes up, to help you. In the meantime, I'll do the best I can...

    1. Don't worry too much about her not drinking water. If she is eating wet (canned) food, she is probably getting what she needs. At this age, I wouldn't still be feeding her kitten milk and definitely not cows' milk (it's hard for cats to digest). There is special cat milk available in some countries, which is fine.

    2. She licks you because she loves you! Kitty drool also means she loves you! You are lucky to be being licked and drooled over...

    3. Are you in Korea? It's hard for us because I'm in NZ and I don't know what foods are good over there. But I don't think there is any real problem in feeding her canned food all the time if that's what she prefers. Just make sure it is a high quality canned food.

Good luck enjoying your new baby!

  3. Welcome to TDK! Not many people on this time of night, but I will take a stab at answering your questions; others who know more about kittens will be on later. 1st, don't give her cow's milk. It will upset her digestive system. Use KMR (kitten milk replacer) which you can get at wal-mart, etc. tho at 12 weeks she probably doesn't need milk any more. About water, my Molly won't drink water either, and I have tried every possible way to get her to drink. So I give her just wet food and she seems to do ok. When I do have dry food available, she would get constipated but since I switched to all wet, she hasn't been.
2nd, for the suckling; it seems to be very comforting to the kitty to do this, and there have been lots of suggestions on this forum. One is to substitute a soft cloth (like teeshirt material) especially if it smells like you, or a towel or even a blanket as Bobby does. GD's Bobby loves to do that, or did as a kitten, not sure if he still does. Other wise, I don't think in hurts anything as long as you don't mind her doing it! Could be worse, some cats suck their peoples' ears!
3rd, I think cats can be fed canned every day. Since I'm trying to keep Molly hydrated, she gets two cans a day. We have a poster (furryfriends50) who recommends raw food and has several good links on it. Hope this helps.
Is that Nyang in your avatar? Very sweet!

  7. Welcome to TDK! Try not to keep a water bowl near the kitten's food. Once we moved the water bowl away from the feeding station, our cats drank more water! One of my friends had various 'watering holes' all over their house for their kitties, putting out three or four bowls in a variety of locations. The cats really liked it, I saw them drinking many times out of all the bowls.

We now have a bowl of water on a boot tray near our front door, and a second water bowl on the bathroom floor. Our two cats like the 'free range' aspect of taking little sips of water throughout the day. When we had the food and water bowls together, they hardly ever drank water.

  8. WOW thank you for generous welcoming and all those answers! Now I'm a bit relievcd about the way I'm feeding her :D One more thing--this happened last night, she's been suckling on her own paw skin since I've been refraining her from suckling on my skin. lol!! Do any of ur kittens do this? haha It looks just like a baby sucking on her fingers! looks adorable and better that she finally found a substitution, but I just hope this is not a 'strange' behavior..

  10. Many kitties never give up the desire to suckle. Bob (a very famous kitty here at TDK) has a special blankie he suckles and my big boy Blackbeard really likes to suckle on my fuzzy robe. I think it's pretty cute~!
