  1. Hey everyone,

    I need some advice. As most of you know, or have read, I should say, I start graduate school tomorrow. I am traveling up to Portland, OR later this afternoon. Anyways, I have the biggest case of the nerves! I have not started packing or anything, like it will all just go away or something. Another feeling I am having is called in the medical school the "imposter feeling" where you think that you have tricked everyone so far into thinking that you are smart and can do this, like someone will catch you and find out that you've been faking it the whole time. & I'm am really battling the thought of going to hide under the covers and wishing everything would just disappear :-\

  2. Awwww...AL...What a wonderful feeling you describe!!! Oh I know the case of nerves may have you feeling rattled but hon...the feelings I experience of having never tried, or done what you are about to do...well, it thrills me to know what you're about to embark upon. You're bright, intelligent, beautiful and well worth your place in graduate school. You worked hard and sacrificed much to get where you are. Please don't question yourself. Enjoy each and every butterfly. Oh...and a glass of wine with a meal can do ALOT to calm ones nerves. Sending you prayers and positive white light AL...Work hard and make us proud!!! =)

  3. ((AL))
    Case of the nerves is justified, but how exciting for you. You are starting another chapter in your life and think of the people you will meet, the things you will learn and the new things you will see. You are obviously an intelligent woman or you would not have gotten into school. It's daunting, sure, but you have what it takes to conquer the the nerves and the world. You have the support of your hubby to be, your future mother in law and all of TDK behind you. Go show them what you are made of...We are so proud of you!

  5. AL,I am familiar with the "impostor feeling" from when I went to nursing school and I was in the various hospitals on clinicals,and about my first year in nursing. When someone called me nurse I had to fight the feeling to turn my head and see who they were calling that name.lol
    You'll do great and you'll feel better once you're working. :)

  6. Sending reassuring hugs that you can do this AL. You got accepted to the school so they know you are intelligent and can do this.

  7. LOL, at Buttercup because I have felt exactly the same way, AL. I can't think how many times in my nursing career I have felt that way! But you are no impostor and you have definitely got the right stuff. If you weren't nervous, then you wouldn't fully appreciate the adventure that you're embarking on. Take a deep breath, believe and you'll be fine.

    And take a look behind you. See those hundreds of little paw prints? That's us - your TDK family!

  8. AL, I had the "imposter feeling" all the way through four years of college and two years of grad school. And you know what? I was wrong, I did belong there, and I had earned it. I wonder sometimes what I missed out on out of fear of being "found out" :) I don't want you to miss out on everything grad school has to offer, so I am sending you hugs and kitty kisses from George, because we *know* that you have earned this, you belong there, and you CAN do this.

  9. It's those who are too cocksure and overconfident who are the imposters - you're just showing a little humility. You got it - you earned it. The very best of luck to you {{{hugs}}}

  10. AL I know the nerves. You will be great! I wish I had wise words, but all I can say is--I Believe In YOU!!

  11. You are going to do great, AL. The nerves will go away once you get there and dig in to the work. :)

  12. Hey AL - graduate school is a lot of hard work, but it is also incredibly satisfying and rewarding - and FUN. You get to spend the next few years learning about and doing things that really, really interest you.

    This is the adventure of a lifetime - so plaster a smile on your face, and get packing! And when you start to panic, put a big fake grin on -- they've done studies, when you smile (even a fake smile!), you start to feel better.

    It's been a few years since I was a grad student -- but it was the best experience for me. I hope it will be for you, too.

  13. AL, Wow, I didn't know there was a name for it ~ I lived all of my academic life, starting in grade school (skipped a grade), top of my class in high school, honors at entrance for college, dean's list, honors at graduation from college, professor in grad school trying to recruit me into his Econ program, blah, blah, blah..... ALWAYS had the "imposter feeling" and the internal panic that goes with it ~ had all the honors most anyone could achieve, but still felt like 'someone was going to find out I didn't belong there'...... TRUST ME, YOU DEFINITELY BELONG THERE. You have EARNED your place, and if you don't like it, you've earned the right to do something else. Oh, I just wish I could see you in person, hug you, and explain more... {{{Hugs}}}

  14. Thank you all for the kind words. I made it safely up to Portland and where I am staying. We are going to explore the streetcar route so I can get myself to school. I am still very nervous, and feel like crying at a drop of a pin sometimes, but I'm getting better. I hope it will get better after I know where I am going.

  16. {{{AL}}} How are you doing??

    Posted 2 years ago by kittymom #

  17. Go, AL! See, it gets easier, and the more familiar you get with the area and the routine, the easier it will get. And then suddenly, one day, all of sudden you'll realize that yes, this is where you belong.

    Please keep us updated on how you're doing.

  18. I've had the same thing happen to me since returning to school this fall. I didn't know there was a name for it but it describes perfectly how I feel. Like I don't belong, even though I've recieved five A's. If you've been accepted into a graduate program AL, your grades must've been why you were accepted. You belong there. It's funny how when we get the chances we want in life we have to undergo such unexpected anxiety. I had night mares starting a week before school and am still having intense weird dreams about school. Get settled, pick up a little gourmet meal-to-go from somewhere near the campus and definately have that glass of vino!
