3. Jill, their mother, is largely canonized in the novel, and both brothers claim a profound love and respect for her, and further describe her as an ideal mother. Did she strike you as ideal? In what way? Has the memory of Jill been romanticized over the years by both Micah and Nicholas?

No I wouldn't think she was ideal but we all have our own vision of ideal in something like this. I did like how she handled their quarreling by making them tell her 3 good things about each other every night. That was inspired. I'm sure her memory has been romanticized somewhat; I think that would be natural and she did love them a lot. I did believe that

I agree - not particularly ideal, but she sure did work hard for her children. She so wanted them to have what she had, but she did the best with what she had. That would certainly earn love and respect from her children. It was nice to see that she was eventually able to get a horse like when she was a girl.
