That depends very much on you, Cougar. Do you want a particular kind -- breed -- of kitty and where are you?
I would always say adopt because there are not enough homes for all the wonderful cats and kittens in the world who want one. And if you buy one from a pet store, you are probably encouraging kitten mills etc. I always want to adopt all the beautiful cats and kittens in my shelter so that's what I would do. If it's a good shelter, they should come vet-checked, neutered or spayed (or, if they're too young, with a vet's voucher so you can have it done inexpensively when the time comes) and with all their shots. You will pay something towards this.
However, if you want a pure-bred kitten or cat -- and there are some beautiful breeds -- you may want to go to a breeder. However, you will pay a great deal -- hundreds of dollars probably -- for the privilege.
As a great compromise, if you DO decide on a particular breed or perhaps have a couple of breeds in mind, still get in touch with all your local shelters --they may well have a cat or kitten of that breed needing a home. Also, there are some shelters especially for pure-bred cats who need a new, loving home. Have a think, do some research, and check out what's available around your area. Your kitty companion will be with you for at least 14 years, if you are lucky, and maybe much longer, so you want to make the right decision for both of you!

If you want a purebred there are many adults needing a new home. I prefer an adult because you can see their personality, whereas a kitten has not developed one yet. Here is another site that is easier to see what's available than the one above:

I'm with the adopt. That said, if you have your heart set on a particular breed, look around for a reputable breeder. If you buy, make sure it is from someone who takes good care of their cats. And - take it from me- check that out BEFORE you look at any kitten. It's easy to fall in love with a kitten and want to rescue it from a bad situation. It's much harder to remind yourself that giving money in a situation like that only perpetuates it.

I hate to say this but wether you adopt or purchase a purebreed you will be spending money!
I chose to buy my babies and am quite satisfied with my choice, they came with their CFA papers as well as a 1 year death of defect agreement as well as having someone who knows the breed and can help educate me on issues that might pop up. If you buy purebreed make sure it is a devoted breeder to the breed as well as an organization. Adopting is a good thing as well but sadly lately i have had friends getting cats and kittens from shelters only to end up with huge vet bills for health concerns and some have spent that money only to loose them. So either way it is a choice adopt or purchas jsut don't purchase from a pet store!

Tragically, Ange, that is true too, whatever way you look at it, having a pet is a substantial financial commitment, especially at the beginning and end of their lives. If you can afford it, it's nothing, but if you can't afford it, it's everything... like so much in life. {{{Hugs}}}

Cougar simple. Many pet stores that sell purebreeds tend to get their stock or product from kitten and puppy mills these would be individually owned types. If you purchase from Petsmart or Petco that is fine sine they work with their local shelters to find the shelter animals homes. If you are interested in a specific breed research it then hit up your local vets to see if anyone in the area is a breeder. if they go to the vets obviously they are taking care of their animals health and you have a helath record history you can find.
If you cna't afford the shelters purchase price or the breeders mind you I'd suggest only working with a repitable one that is aligned with CFA, TICA or TCA! They have strict guidelines expected for their members to work within.
Last option check the classifieds for free kittens which are often available around farm properties where their colonies of felines usually are not nuetered and spayed and that might have some issues like fleas, ear mites, worms so be prepared in that since to take to the vet ASAP and have them checked for health. Just some thoughts!
