I already know I live in one of the highest cost of living areas. When I go to the grocery store or to the gas station, I am immediately reminded of this. I am reminded of this when I go to rent an apartment. In my area, I can't even begin to think of buying a house. Not in my life time will I ever be able to afford one. Even if I inherit a house, I won't be able to afford to keep it due to property taxes. The price for living in a nice environment. Unfortunately too many people want to live here too. I have tossed around the idea of moving but the way things seem to go, you have to move first and then find a job as no one will hire you if you aren't local. Wouldn't even dream of quitting a job unless I had a new one lined up first in these horrible economic times. Kind of a catch-22.

  2. YIKES ! Guess I'll stay where I am ! I'd love to live on the coast, but not at that price. I wonder if they included Hawai'i in their samplings... it, too, is extremely expensive. My property taxes just went up - again - but not to an unaffordable range.

  3. Interesting, because when I lived in the San Diego area (where La Jolla, CA is located) it was MUCH more expensive to live in the San Francisco Bay area (which includes the Palo Alto and San Mateo areas). Now it seems there are more 'expensive' areas in Southern CA than Northern CA.... SSM, if you inherited a house, wouldn't you have the advantage of the lower property tax base benefit of California's Prop 13? It was/is a godsend to California homeowners ~ it helps keep the government from financing their extragavance on the backs of homeowners!
