  1. hello everyone,
I am really hoping to get as much advice I can on a ill kitten I had found 4 days ago. I had found him on the side of the road as if someone left him there to die. he has improved since I have had him actually quite a bit. when he first arrived home he was a bag of bones, still is but looks and feels as if he has put on a little weight. thank goodness!

at first I thought we would do well on just plain old iams kitten canned food and water along with a warm place to sleep. two days later I saw he was urinating himself while eating, sleeping etc. it came to me that he had a bladder infection and hopefully not a kidney infection. he had ick all over the back of his legs and tummy so I gave him a bath, well the day after it was back again and it came to me that it is urine. so he has/had urinary incontinence.

I found online that 50/50 apple cider vinegar and water were the way to go. so I tried syringe feeding, bad thing is I think he may have aspirated some! ever since he has been wheezing and while he eats/drinks he sounds as if he is choking. this really scares me. also his little pee pee is very swollen, i am scared there could be a blockage soon to come. I read about that also online.

someone advised me to give him KMR to get him back on his feet. I scraped up the last of my money to get him a large can of it for almost 30 dollars. yes I do know the best thing would be to get him to a vet but as I said I used the last of my money and literally only have a nickel and a few pennies left in my purse until pay day which isnt for another week.

he also I believe has a upper respitory infection, very runny eyes and nose and a little bit of a hard time breathing. he is around 4-6 weeks my best guess from his teeth...? called around to local vets and they all said I must have the money and to bring at least 100 dollars, i dont even know I will have that once I get paid. I am the only income in the house and have to support my year old son. I do not know what to do!!! all rescues are full in our area. I would LOVE to keep him as I know our finances will improve to get him neutered/shots, etc. its just right at this moment I am very POOR.

I have been giving him the KMR and giving him 250 mg of lysine total per day (supposively good for URI) and two capsules broken open of cranberry) in his KMR milk every feeding. also I put 1/2 tsp of apple cider vinegar so he will not aspirate it and I also stick some pedialyte in there as well to help with dehydration. he loves it which is a good thing. I give him as much as he will take and he is old enough to lap. also I have a towel for him to lay on that I will throw in the dryer to keep it warm and I have a few heat packs on the towel that I can toss in the microwave. also I have a night time lizard heat lamp going and yes I checked to see that it is not too hot it is 75 watts and only spot heats so he can move away from it if too warm.

good news! he seems to no longer be urinating himself. I really think the cranberry powder and apple cider vinegar helped. he has perked up some but still needs help. I am trying my best to give him as much TLC as I can. if I am doing something wrong or if I need to do something else then please advise me!

he is walking and very friendly but still seems pretty weak. he is using the litterbox very well. I really think he needs an antibiotic, but as the vets said he must be evaluated, etc. and they want him to leave with the whole sha bang and yes I really want that but it is sooooooooo expensive. I really wish I found him a month later he would be at the vet in good hands. any advice please?!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Kittenzmum, I have no experience in little foundling kittens like this at all. But we need to keep your post up towards the top as there are others here who have a lot of experience. It can be very quiet on TDK on the weekends, so don't give up on having someone answer your questions and offer some advice.

Welcome to TDK and thank you for rescuing this little kitten.

  5. yes he does seem better but about a half hour ago he drank some more of his KMR milk and sounded like he was going to cough up a lung this usually happens when he is drinking liquids? so far his name is charlie not sure if it fits him yet though. would love to post a pic but cannot find my cord to transfer pics onto my computer. any advice on names would also be great. he is beautiful peach colored fluffy tabby.

  6. Warmth, fluids and nourishment until you can get to a vet. Be sure if you are bottle feeding that you do not hold baby on his back like a human infant that is asking for pneumonia.

  7. baby kitty is lapping so no worries about the bottle feeding, he laps up his milk very well.

  8. Welcome to TDK. KM.
If baby kitty is gurgling and wheezing a bit, there is probably some fluid on his lungs, and the swollen pee pee sounds like an infection. For such a young kitten, even though you are doing a wonderful job with the little mite, these two symptoms need vet attention and probably an antibiotic. One or other by itself might be ok, but his system is under considerable stress with both going on at once. Is there anyone at all you could borrow the money from?

  9. yes I know he is doing well besides the two possible infections which I think are very much so going on. I have asked around to borrow money and everyone I have asked either does not have it or they say they need the money. suppossively there is a vet in a nearby town that is open tomorrow that might take what ever we have to get at least the antibiotic. that would be great! if that fails I really dont know what to do. does anyone know of a place online I can order amoxicillian without a prescription? that would be perfect. Im sure I can get the money for an antibiotic but I do not and will not have 100 dollars to spare at our regular vet.

  10. Hi, Kittenzmum. Welcome to TDK! Bless you for trying to help this little one. Does your local shelter provide support for people who are fostering rescued animals? You might want to contact the shelter to see if they would pay for medical care if you agree to foster Charlie. You can also check with the vet to see if the vet might give a discount to you since this is a rescue situation. Good luck!

  11. I think KW's advice is good, I got help with stray cats and kittens from our local shelter before I started volunteering there (there used to be a feral cat colony across the road from me). They might be able to help with antibiotics or they might have a local vet who would see you for less. As KW says, if you become an official foster, they might be able to help with food as well.

Bless you for taking care of this little one, it sounds like you are doing an amazing job.

  12. bumping just to keep this near the top!

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  13. hello everyone again! thanks for bumping! well I did contact a few rescues when he first arrived the few that I did get a hold of said they no longer had the funding to help fosters and their own cats they care for. others still have not returned my calls. we dont have too many rescues where I live, a lot have closed b/c of the economy unfortunately. anyhow, the kitten now is breathing very shallow and is breathing with his mouth open, I am very worried. I keep staying up with him and he still manages to climb on top of me and curl up on my lap. he is very hungry but he stops soon after he starts eating b/c he cant stop coughing, when he eats it really gets him going with coughing. sounds like a lot of fluid is inside. I keep running the shower in the bathroom he is staying in to help break up the mucous in his lungs. yellow mucous is now coming out of his nostrils. He is a strong little guy and really is a fighter. as soon as the vet opens in the morning, my husband and I will be there waiting at the door to open. I will keep you all updated. thanks so much for the support!

  16. wht happened to charlie KM? I really hope he's ok. My little one had thick yellow mucous and difficulty in breathing too the last week. A dose of antibiotics and she was as good as new. Why does it cost so much in the US for Vet services? Here in Malaysia, my bills never exceed RM 40 (slightly more than $11?) unless it involves surgery and hospitalization. And at my Uni, we have a vet clinic that gives u a discount if it's a rescue case. It's so sad that this fella has to suffer just b/c vet bills are so expensive. :(

  17. My heart is breaking reading this post. I hope and pray he made it. This so sad to read. I just rescued a kitten 2 weeks ago, he was only 4 weeks old, but he is now thriving. Of course we have had 2 visits to the vet costing $300.
