  1. Today is the 77th birthday of The Rev. Desmond Tutu, archbishop emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa. His struggle for equality and peace began with his campaign of nonviolence against apartheid, and continues in many different areas today.

    Also today in 1985, the Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro was hijacked by Palestinian militants off the coast of Egypt. One man would die in the course of the hijacking, and all of the militants responsible would be caught and tried for their crimes.
