5 week-old kitten still won't pee/poo on her own

  1. Hi all. I'm new here and I'm glad i stumbled onto this site now. I rescued a kitten last week from a back alley. Vet checked her out and said she was probably 4 weeks old and was in a fairly ok condition. Soon though, she developed a very bad flu and was put on antibiotics. She has bounced back amazingly and is now plump and happy. The thing is, she's at least 5 weeks old now and she still won't go poo or pee without stimulation. I know they're supposed to be able to handle these things by the time they turn 3weeks of age. I tried stimulating her over a litter box (1-inch box filled with shredded newspaper) and then scratching her front paw on the litter once she's done eliminating but she still hasn't tried to go on her own. Should I stop the stimulation and see what happens? Will she get constipated? She's weaned and eating(a lot!) moist kitty biscuits now.

  2. It's possible being so sick has delayed her development. I've never heard of a grown up cat who was otherwise healthy but still needed stimulation. So, eventually she will start going on her own. You might try putting her in the litter box without stimulation and see what she does. Then if she doesn't do anything you can stimulate just a little. She'll get the idea soon.

  3. Will it work even if she's not litterbox-trained? Meanwhile, do you think it's a good idea if I stop stimulating her after each meal? Maybe wait and watch if it gets too much for her and she might give it a go herself? I've not stimulated her since morning and it's evening now. Her tummy is bloated cuz she's been eating and not eliminating (can't be worms cuz I just dewormed her 2 days ago). It's not rock hard though so maybe I'll wait. She seems quite comfortable...no uneasiness.

And she's still very very clumsy with food and milk. She absolutely refuses water so I feed her milk in a shallow tray but she doesn't know to lap and I've tried teaching her by letting her lick off my fingers. She licks milk off my fingers just fine but when it comes to the tray, she bites the edge of the tray and immerses her lower jaw into the milk and licks milk from that (a bit like suckling the tray edge). She doesn't lift food off with her tongue either. She just nosedives into the soft food and bites chunks around the area where she's buried her face into. In a frenzy I might add. I can't make her learn. She gets annoyed and nips me painfully
