My little sumi has lost her appetite, usually voracious. She was slowing down two nights ago, and by this morning was hardly interested in her food. She's five and a half months now, so will be coming on heat soon, and I'll take her to be spayed. Could hormones have an effect on her appetite? She's as madly energetic as ever, playing and running like crazy around the house, also very affectionate, purring lots, wanting to play in the bathroom sink as usual. I did get her to eat some salmon, and some kibble tonight, as I am worried about her calorie intake. She's a lean 'teenager' and can't afford to miss out on her meals. The other thing I thought of was teething problems - she lost a tooth about ten days ago, which I'm presuming was a milk tooth...I'll bring her to the vet on Saturday unless things have turned around. I'm getting her some fresh raw chicken tomorrow, which she normally loves.

sumi not eating

If she still isn't eating try syringe feeding raw egg yolks as well as a bit of liver.
Chester for some reason was off about a month ago and started to refuse to eat. Since he is fed all raw I really didn't want to try feed wet food so I gave him egg yolks which are very easy to syringe feed. They are also very nutritious and the best part (for me) is that they are still raw. I mainly did the liver as well just in case he ate to much bone and was constipated since liver really, well, loosens things up.
About 24 hours afer I gave him the egg yolk and liver he was back to his normal starving self. I don't know if somehow he did get to much bone by stealing some from another cat or if he just was feeling down that day; either way it worked.

I'd think it is that she is growing new teeth/losing teeth; that hurts.
I don't know why she would all the sudden quit eating unless it is hurting to eat?

Yes, I think it is hurting her to eat. I think her mouth is hurting, period. She's not completely starving; she ate a half pack of wet organic this morning and a little more now - it's just that she's not nearly as interested. I think I'm taking her to the vet to get it checked out anyway. This is so unlike my little savage..
I found this: http://www.linkroll.com/teething/Kitten-Teething.php
It does seem to describe her current behaviour quite well, so that must be it. Maybe the vet can give me something to soothe her gums. -
Try giving her baby food if her gums are sore.

Depending on the breed, she could have teeth/gum problems.... it's very common in Siamese to have dental problems - Abby had to have 7 double teeth pulled - they were "second" teeth that came in behind her normal ones.... crowded the normal ones, and became inflamed.....
.... and the baby food (stage one only) is an excellent for now.... it's very attractive to cats, soft & each to eat, and very easy on sensitive stomachs too!

I've just fed sumi an egg yolk, very successfully!! She had refused her dinner, which I had mushed up for her, despite all my coaxing and loving talk.....and had refused kibble, even pulverized, as I wanted her to get some calories, poor skinny baby.. So, I separated an egg yolk, left it to come up to room temperature, and fed it to the little darling as she cosied up to us on the sofa. She licked it very enthusiastically from the tiny teaspoon I offered it to her on. She went at it until the whole yolk was well gone! So, now I am going to bed happy in the knowledge that sumi has her protein! She looked very happy afterwards, licking her paws and grooming herself. I'm 99% sure it's her poor raw gums - we'll see how it goes - not spending €50 to be told what we already know! I'll give her a few more days.....as long as she's getting some nutrition into her, she'll be ok. She's pooping just fine too, which is a good sign!

If Sumi's mouth feels anything like mine did when I had braces I can't blaim her for only wanting soft food!
Glad she ate the egg yolk!

Ooh dearie me, just in from successful vet visit. Just before we left the house I had a closer look in sumi's mouth and discovered that the long side tooth, top-side, was really loose!! The poor little mite, it's no wonder she didn't want to eat! She had lost a milk canine two weeks ago, but this big tooth was giving her poor red gums a hard time! Ruth, my vet, pulled the tooth out in one go, with her fingers! It bled but sumi hardly noticed - I think she's been in general pain, so pulling the tooth didn't hurt any more, and it was so loose. First Ruth thought it was one of her adult teeth, and that it was broken, but then realised it was the last of her baby teeth. She said there are some lovely healthy looking adult teeth coming down too, which of course adds to the pain. I managed to get her to eat a small tin of some awful supermarket brand before i brought her to the vet, but now she still won't eat, not even egg yolk. Ruth gave her a pain-killer in a needle, and sumi squalled and hissed at her! But the effect will last 24 hours, so hopefully she'll eat tonight. I suppose I should stick to very soft food. I don't know about baby food - maybe in the States you can get good stuff, but here I can only find food with 10% chicken, lots of other dodgy stuff like cream (for babies..?) and onions, which I don't want to give my furkin. Think it's back to the chicken broth and mushed up chicken breast for my sum-sum!!

Awwwww eleniki, hopefully Sumi will feel better soon....After Abby had her dental surgery (7 teeth pulled), she was MUCH better!.....
..... I'm surprized you can't find the stage one baby food meats in the UK.... it's 100% meat with a little water - that's it! nothing else..... that's why we use it often for our furbabies when they need pure, simple and soft protein....
... I totally agree, if it's got other stuff in it, and only 10% meat, don't use that!.......if the egg yolks are working, I'm glad.... I'm sure she'll start eating again when her little mouth feels better!
