Should I still feed Willow kangaroo meat?

(12 posts)
  1. Before Willow got sick with IBD his favourite food was kangaroo meat. Now I'm slowly trying to put him back on raw...introducing one food at a time so that I can try and identify which food he has an allergy to (as the vet said his IBD is most likely caused by a food allergy). Anyway Willow loves kangaroo but a lady told me that kangaroo is very rich so I'm not sure if I should feed it to him anymore. What does everyone think?

  2. I'd say the more variety that you can the better. Wish I could get stuff like kangaroo meat!

Also, typically if a cat is allergic to chicken in dry/wet cat food it isn't allergic to that meat when it is raw.

  3. oh thanks for that furryfriend ...I was wondering that exact thing. Do you think there is any possibility it could work the other way round - i.e. a cat could be allergic to the raw meat without being allergic to the dry food?

  4. I have no idea...it could be the other way around.

Also from what I found out tonight: don't feed goat. Most of mine hated it...

  5. JessiJ, the only way you will find out definitely is to try Willow on a small amount of kangaroo and monitor him. Several sites I looked at also said kangaroo meat was very rich so it would be a good idea to keep kangaroo as a treat and feed other raw meat instead.

  6. Cats require a diet fairly rich in fat, so I'm not sure that kangaroo meat would be altogether a bad thing. Any idea what the protein & fat ratio is?

  7. I don't know how much protein:fat cats need but figure that the average piece of meat has the right amount. With my cats being in a barn I think during the winter they will get more fatty meat and fish oil to keep up their wieghts.

  8. According to another site I found Ann, kangaroo meat is very low in fat, but other sites say it is rich. Just what it is rich in they don't say. If Willow doesn't have a reaction to it I would say still feed it but with other meat or as an occasional treat.

  9. oh I just thought of something. Most of the kangaroo meat available is prepackaged pet mince - which might be higher in fat because it probably uses scrap. I've decided to buy Willow the human grade kangaroo meat because it is very low in fat and is an excellent source of protein. I just really hope he gets better.

  10. JessiJ, check out what Anncetera said about cats requiring a diet rich in fat, you may already be buying the correct grade of kangaroo.
I had kangaroo tail soup years ago and it was absolutely delicious.

  11. Here is a website that gives a breakdown of the nutritional contents of kangaroo meat. It looks like the human grade meat has less than 2% fat.

  12. Just got back from the trip and saw this. I became a fan of kangaroo in Germany. It is a rich meat, but exceedingly lean. I would think it is a good meat for raw food feeding. The fact that it is high protien and lower in fat content, as long as all the proper vitamins are stored. Sure can't get kangaroo in the States.
