Yeowie owsie! It does sound painful just saying it! Actually the colonoscopy wasn't as bad as I feared. (Doc did find diverticulitis so I know about that pain). Good luck with the rest of your tests!

Beth, I honestly have no experience, or much knowledge, with that. I'm just glad that you know what it is and can go forward with a treatment plan. The colonscopy is nothing. The prep - a whole different story!
Hugs!

It always helps to have a diagnosis, at least then you know where you are. Hubby says the prep is the worst part of a colonoscopy and you soon forget that when it's all over.

That's right, MS. The prep is the worst part.

((Beth)) wow honey..I don't know about the other but the diverticulitis..my sister has that and she just got part of her colon removed and she has a colostomy bag and in 6 months they will go back in to repair the colon and remove the bag. She was in the hospital in and out for like 2-3 weeks till they figured out what was wrong. Take care my friend.

My advice for prep for a colonoscopy is to eat gently for a few days before you go on the liquid diet, then buy the softest bathroom tissue you can find. If you go for jello during the prep, go for the sugared kind, not sugar-free. Chicken broth tastes better than chicken boullion. :-) Drink lots and lots and lots of water.

Beth - the colonoscopy is no biggie - had one a couple years ago, as I am a lady of a certain age... The procedure itself was nothing after they started the drip of happy juice... you can watch if you want! And they show you pictures after!
I did the prep that involved the small concentrate (lemon flavored, sort of)and lots of water, rather than the gallon of stuff, altho I have heard that it tastes better now... White grape juice is good too, during the fast day, I found. In general for colon health you want to boost fruits and veggies and whole grains for the fiber, and dring lots of water... I find my GI tract works better if I eat yogurt on a regular basis as well...

They give you a drug now to erase your memory of the colonoscopy. I took the liquid prep but I hear the pills are easier. I just have a hard time swallowing pills.

Versed - knocks you out and you don't remember the procedure at all. In my case... I don't remember most of that whole day and into the evening! My good friend was my driver that day, and she swears by "what happens in recovery, stays in recovery." Thank heavens for good friends LOL

for diverticulitis avoid things like corn and nuts as they don't digest well and the little pieces can lodge in the diverticular pockets.

(sheepishly raises paw) I have a tortuous colon. Yes, it is painful and yes it can be helped with diet and lots of water. The colonoscopy is a breeze, I have one every six months and have had since 1996. And yes, what happens in recovery had better STAY in recovery. You can't leave until you pass an adequate amount of gas! I had a colon resection in 2003 which left me with just enough colon as not to have a colostomy bag. I also take meds to help things along in my digestive tract! :D

Beth, be SURE they get your weight right before they take you in. When I had my 50-years-old screening colonoscopy, they asked me what I weighed and I didn't know. I expected they'd put me on a scale, but they didn't. They must have guessed at my weight and underestimated it, because I, too, was awake during the procedure. I was double-scoped, gastroscopy and colonoscopy at the same time, and I gagged on the gastroscope and screamed every time the doctor pumped air into my colon. The nurses assisting him were fretfully anxious to reassure me and calm me down every time I screamed, so I get the feeling that the doctor was not best pleased at having me under-dosed on the Versed.
Have you or anyone in your family ever had Versed before? In my family, it produces severe headaches that can be effectively treated with Benadryl. If you know of this tendency before you receive the Versed, they can administer the Benadryl IV at the same time and it prevents the problem completely.

Beth, for those unfamiliar with the inner workings, as it were, of the colon, could you please clarify what's happening inside you? I don't exactly relish the thought of having anything jammed 'up there' if my internal med doctor ever found anything wrong along my digestive tract.

Vicki, a tortuous sigmoid colon is one that takes abnormal twists and turns on its way to the rectum. Diverticulitis is a complication of diverticulosis. Diverticulosis is the presence of abnormal pouches in the lining of the intestine. When these pouches get infected or otherwise inflamed, it is diverticulitis.

well i'm not a gastro nuse.. but a tortuious colon is a twisted intestine that is to long.... mine is my sigmoid which is the large intestine on my left side , and the divterculi are out pouchings in the intestine that can rupture or abcess .. mine are on or near my tortious colon.. tortuious colon's are either inherited or come from trauma , mine must of been inherited i would think.. i am still researching the tortuious colon... i really don't know that much about it... yeah i don't relish a scope put up my bum.. but if i must i must... esp problems with the sigmoid colon .. that's the area prone to rectal and colon cancer ... better to be safe than sorry....
leeny i will be sure they get my weight .. to be awake during that would be horrible... i would probably code ..lol...
