2 week old kitty having trouble going to the bathroom

(11 posts)
  1. I have a orphaned two week old kitten and she is actually doing really well. She eats like a little piggy and sleeps really well when content. However, she is not pooping very often. In fact she hasn't really pooped in about 2 or 3 days. I was just wondering if anyone has an suggestions to help me out. I do stimulate her before and after feedings. She is peeing a lot! I am just wondering if maybe her body is using all the nutrients from the formula. I had her weighed yesterday and she is 6 oz...which is really good for her age I was told.
Any suggestions would be a great help for me and my new little baby girl!

  2. It may be normal for one so young not to go potty every single day, since all she can have at this stage is formula. Unless her tummy feels hard or swollen, she's probably OK. But you might want to call the vet and ask just to be on the safe side. Good luck with your little one.

  3. i totally agree with mayra - at that young age poop every 2-3 days is fine. wait till she starts eating solid food before expecting regular poop. you can also check out this website, it has a lot of really goog info on hand rearing kitties - http://www.messybeast.com/handrear.htm.

  5. Thank you so much! I contacted my vet, and she too said it was normal, she told me that if her stomache were to get hard to give her a tiny tiny drop of mineral oil. After I went to the CVS drug store and purchaced the mineral oil I came home and it was feeding time, so I stimulated her first to go to the bathroom...and wouldn't you know the litte stinker pooped...yay. LOL I was relieved! She is doing well and my 4 year old son just loves her.
SKYRON-Thanks for the site its great!
I will keep everyone posted to how she is doing! Can anyone tell me how to get a picture on here?!

  6. On sort of a sidenote, I was wondering something...

When my kittens first started going #2, they would usually whine a little which is how I would know to put them in the litter box. They don't do it as often, but sometimes they'll go in the litter box and whine a bit as they poo...is that common? And what sort of consistency should it be?

  7. it's normal for babies to cry when they first become aware of the fact that they're pooping. it must be really traumatising when you're that young and there's something stinky emerging from your ass . . . as far as consistency goes, i've only ever potty trained bottle babies, in which case the poop is a solid, sticky yellow that turns brown after a while. glad the website was usefull :)

  8. Isometimes find that palpating their their intestine and bladder helpful in getting them to pee/poo. But it should be done carefully. My best friend is a vet who taught me to do it properly. You cud ask your vet to show it to u too. But use it only in extreme cases where you've tried everything and can't get a vet anytime soon.

  10. Poop every 2-3 days in such a young baby is totally normal. If you're really concerned, check out the website I posted earlier on this feed. I dont know anything about giving kittens enemas, I would rather just give him some vegetable oil to ease him up if he's constipated.
