  1. As many of you know I am a Director of Rehabilitation Services over several Nursing Homes. This week we were expecting a husband/wife to come in for therapy after surgery (her spinal fusion) and chemo (him prostate cancer). Due to an infection she came yesterday and he stayed in the hospital a day longer. He was expected at 11am this morning. By 1130am she was pacing the halls asking where her husband was. We jokingly said that you know how it is a hospital says 11am and really means 4pm! By 1145am she was hysterical, saying "something is wrong". Pretty soon I see two paramedics come in asking for the Director of Nursing. Her husband was being transported from the hospital in an ambulance. About a block outside the facility they were hit head on by a speeding car that flipped over the median. It ripped the front off of the ambulance and our patient was thrown from the ambulance and crushed. The paramedics were crushed as well. A coworker saw the driver of the car thrown to the side of the road. The car was a Pontiac Bonneville and was nothing more than a crushed ball of aluminium foil. They rushed the wife to the hospital as none of the people in the ambulance were even expected to make it alive to the hospital. The husband was placed on life support just long enough for his kids to get to the hospital. He was then taken off. All others involved were in ICU at the last update, none of which are expected to live. I, along with the family and my coworkers are all devastated. I am really numb, many of these paramedics come to our facility daily to pick up/transport people. I am even more numb because FF is sometimes on the ambulance. Who would think you survive prostate cancer only to get killed in an ambulance on the way to rehab? The wife is so kind and pleasant. Please pray for everyone involved. Thanks!

  3. Oh, MC, that is utterly tragic. I am so, so sorry. That is horrifying, especially as that poor man had already been through so much and as paramedics are wonderful, brave people. They will be in my thoughts today. It is very hard for you too, knowing them and knowing that FF sometimes works on the ambulance. Big {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Amy, that is truly one of the worst twists of fate. It is always hard to resolve a death that happens like this one happened. I learned the very hardest way several years ago that life is not fair. We must live every single day as though it could be our last. Petty complaints, differences, gripes don't mean a single thing. When something like this happens, I take it as a reminder of all of that and try to live.

  17. Its funny I am talking to him now and he said you'd be surprised how many times things like that happen in his job. It's just not talked about too much. And the spouses etc know all about it and the risks involved. Doesn't make it easier though.

  22. Just talked to the family of the man in the accident. They pulled all the life support last night and he is still ALIVE! They said dad is a strong man and isn't ready to go yet!

  23. Are you f*****g serious?! THAT'S why I'm a Christian: I know second chances can happen every single day! Even if this man passes away now, he will have gone out fighting instead of having given up.

    Posted 2 years ago by Vicki #

  24. MC, glad to hear that the man is still alive! Still don't see it on the newswire?? Did it happen in Chicago or outside the city?

  25. — A late-morning accident Thursday tied up traffic at the North Alpine-Spring Creek intersection and closed northbound traffic on Alpine for several hours.

    At 11:35 a.m., police responded to a two-vehicle crash in the 2800 block of North Alpine, about three blocks north of Spring Creek Road.

    According to police reports, Brianna L. Pleuss, 19, of Rockford was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima southbound on North Alpine when the vehicle began to slide sideways, crossing the concrete median and striking a northbound vehicle for Lifeline Ambulance Service.

    The driver of the van, Gary D. Hutson, 55, of Loves Park, was at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. His passenger, a 78-year-old male Rockford resident, is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. His identity was not released, pending notification of family.

    Pleuss and a 17-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and were treated at SwedishAmerican Hospital and released. A third occupant in the vehicle, Stanton M. Gavlia, 21, of Rockford, suffered injuries and is in stable condition at SwedishAmerican.

    Pleuss was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions and released from custody. The accident is being reviewed by the Winnebago County state’s attorney’s office for other potential charges.

    North Alpine traffic was restored after 7 p.m. Thursday.

  26. If there's already ice on the roads in the Greater Chicago area, YTF would anyone be driving faster than a crawl? I live in Cleveland, and the occasional fool will slip-slide on the ice and cause a bit of havoc. Greater Chicago is much larger than Greater Cleveland; I'm surprised there weren't even more people affected or even more potential fatalities.

  29. How very tragic... all the way around. The driver of the car may well have been going too fast for conditions.... my prayers go to her as well as the families of those who have passed. That 19 year old girl has to live the rest of her life knowing that she took lives.

    Condolences and sincere sympathies MC.
