  1. As was mentioned on the NS last night I had "stuff" oozing out of my brain surgery incision. It was thick, sticky and pinkish. There was some on my pillow this morning as well. I had a nurse look at it at work today and she said for my to have it looked at right away. I called the NeuroSurgeon right when they opened. Of course he was in surgery. The receptionist said she would have him call me between his surgeries. 1130 comes and goes and I get frustrated. I call back again and she says that he will not be able to call until after 5pm. I get furious and decide to go to the ER. When I get there the first thing they ask is "did you call your surgeon"? Yes, he's in surgery. So they take me IMMEDIATELY (an ER rarity) and I get hit with four people at once (talk about service!). They take me to a room and the nurse takes a look at my head and says she is getting the doctor immediately. He comes in, tell the whole story and he gloves up. He then says he is SO GLAD I made the decision to come in. My pseudomeningiocele (fluid build up on the brain) had blown and I had a hole in the back of my head. All the spinal fluid was leaking out at a slow rate. Soon he was digging in it culturing it and said he was calling my surgeon. I remind him that he is in surgery and he said "guess they will just have to pull him out then. The ER is calling". They DID pull him out of surgery!! I had blood drawn from both arms and both legs and everything on my body was cultured. The culture in my head came back immediately as yeast. The neurosurgeon wanted an immediate IV with high dose antibiotics and fluids. The ER doc said my head is caved in back there too! It feels really gross. The neurosurgeon wanted him to shave my head and bandage me up. The ER doc said "no" and that there wasn't that much hair back there. He said I could easily pull off a bandage, it would be like on a stubbly leg. I know have to keep it clean, bandaged and take very high doses of drugs. They are concerned about meningitis, MRSA (resistant to almost all drugs) or any other infection that could crawl in my hole. I have to see the surgeon on Monday to decide if he wants to put in a shunt, sew me up, staple me, or glue me closed. My head hurts so bad but I am thrilled the ER doc was so good. I really want to cry at the thought of another surgery but I will do what I have to do. Have to limit activity this weekend. It is good that FF is going with the "boys" for a boys weekend. They are all going to Atlanta for the Chicago Bears football game Sunday. Its the yearly Fire Department trip. Looks like Betty has to be a nurse to Wilma and ME!!!!

  19. Amy I am so sorry! Bless the ER doc, and kudos to you for taking the initiative and going into the ER. Maybe in one way they didn't want to admit you because it seems like it is so much easier to pick up infections in a hospital. You might be better off at home where you have less chance of infection. Every time I have been in the hospital I ended up with an infection that had nothing to do with the original reason for being there because of my open trache. Maybe it would be the same for you with the open wound? Please take it easy and let the Nurse Kitties take care of you. Love, hugs and prayers coming your way!

  29. Didn't sleep so well last night. I was between an awful headache and the pain from an open wound (infected) on the back of my head. I couldn't really get comfy. I would sleep for 20 minute intervals. It was nice to see BOTH of the girls sleeping on the bed with me though. They were about as far away from each other as possible. I noticed my blob of fluid has collected again in the back of my head. Sure hope I don't have another gusher of fluid today, guess if I do back to the ER I go. YAY!

    Posted 2 years ago by mollycat71 #

  30. Good Grief, Amy! It never seems to end, does it?! I am sending healing prayers your way that you will get this resolved quickly. Praise goes to that ER doc! He is a rarity! Yay, on your girls getting closer :) {{{HUGS}}}
