I just got a kitten to foster, he's 6 weeks old. I've never, ever in my 20 years of dealing with cats seen such a bad eye infection. He's got it in both eyes - blood and puss just streaming out of his eyes. It actually looks like he's blind in his left eye. The people at the shelter say he's actually been doing a lot better, they've had him on antibiotics and ointment for a week now. I'm definitely taking him to my own vet tomorrow, the man has in the past admitted in hospital some of my kitties with far less-awfull looking eye infections. The thing is, the kitty eats fine, he's not running a fever, his gums are nice and pink, he doesn't look sick at all. Apart from the eyes of course. I've changed his antibiotics, but I'm just going to pray that he looks better tomorrow morning, cause I really think my vet's going to say we have to put him to sleep. Does anyone have any suggestions or insights to offer on eye infections? I usually know what to do with my babies, but this one has me speechless. I've been crying since I picked him up. I cant believe the people at the shelter didn't think to take him back to the vet by now :(

Oh no . . . :(

Oh poor little chap! But if he's as healthy in every other area as you say, I doubt a vet would suggest putting him to sleep, worst case scenario is he loses his eyes, and although he'd need a very special home then, there are stories of cats who adapt very well to blindness and lead happy lives. I have no medical advice to offer Skyron, but will be thinking of you tomorrow, and praying for a postive update {{{hugs}}}

Oh, Skyron, I'm so sorry. This poor baby. That sounds totally appalling. If it is any comfort, my Jasper got a full thickness cut through his eye from another cat during a fight and had to have it removed, he is absolutely fine as a one-eyed cat. I also knew a kitten who had to have an eye removed and he was fine too. To have such a serious infection in both eyes sounds dreadful and there are so many things that could be causing it. Hope you and the kitten have good luck tomorrow at the vet's and that it can be treated. Many {{{HUGS}}} to you for what you do.

His outer eyelids are open, but the inner eyelids are shut, so you can actually see them clearly, and they're bleeding, and swollen. It looks like the inner eyelids are actually swelling out over his outer eyelids. I dont think he can see anything at the moment. When I fed him earlier he could clearly smell the food, and he tried to find it, but he was just wandering around aimlessly till I put him right in front of the food.

Poor baby! I've seen that in some of my feral cats, but if it's a herpes infection antibiotics won't help--he needs a special eye ointment for that. Untreated he could lose the eye(s), though I've seen many get better on their own or with my rinsing with saline. But don't use saline if it's bleeding---sounds like a very bad case. Shame on the shelter! Herpes is contagious so wash your hands thoroughly before handling your pets. Good luck and let us know what happens---we care!

Hi guys! just got back from the vet - turns out the little boy has chlamydia, and the vet is optimistic about his treatment. He said antibiotics won't help, they have specific treatment for chlamydia, so in two weeks time when the treatment is finished he should be fine. At which time they will re-evaluate his left eye and decide if it should be removed or not :O So for now he's isolated, and getting lots of tlc, and yummy food :) His eyes already appear less swollen, they're open and the bleeding and pussy discharge has stopped. I can actually see through the white cloudy stuff in his left eye, which I couldn't do yesterday, so fingers crossed he might be able to keep that eye . . .

Very good news Skyron for both you and the kitten.

Sheba's mom pretty much called that one! Well done littermate! I'm so glad Skyron that you've finally gotten the proper diagnosis and treatment. Someone should literally file a complaint about the shelter for having allowed this infection to get so out of control. Shame on them! Thanks Skyron for looking after this poor sick kitty. Best of luck in getting him back on his feet and hopefully his left eye will indeed be saved.

So the little man started playing tonight - we played hide & seek and chase-the-shoelace :) Which has me really optimistic because is means he can see movement at least. His eyes still look HORRIBLE, but I'll take him back to the vet everyday if I have to. The dr said if I struggle with the 12 times a day treatment he'd be happy to admit him to icu (cant afford a bill of that magnitude right now), so thats always an option if I'm not happy with his progress. Does anybody have any name suggestions? He looks just like a skunk. Cant think of anything original and snappy that will draw attention when he goes up for adoption.

I'm so happy he's doing better. Picking a name can be hard. I named my one kitten, Gus, after a cat my mother use to have, and he seems to have adopted a similar personality. The other kitten I named Ulysses for no particular reason other than I managed to get through the book in college and I liked the multiple syllables juxtaposed with Gus' single-syllable name :-) I hope his condition gets better quickly.

No ideas for a name but so glad there is hope for the little guy! My sister has a mostly blind and epileptic cat and he does just fine. Bless you for taking such good care of him!

I could see the colour of his eyes for the first time this afternoon - they're yellow :D vet's new treatment seems to be working little by little every day. We don't have skunk cartoons in SA, we don't have skunk's either . .. But I still think he looks like one. I thought about maybe calling him Jazz? Don't know. I'll have to chew on it for a few more days.

As the skunk said to Bambi, "you can call me Flower if you want to."
Hope he is still improving and can keep both eyes.
Or you can name him in honor of Homer from the book I just read Homer's Odyssy"

i decided to name the kitty oliver. and then the vet informed me today that oliver should rather be called olivia or something similar .. . boy-cat is in fact a girl-cat. i give up. it's impossible to know what they are when they're still so tiny. so i decided to go with flower, thanks ailuromaniac. i'd forgotten that there was a skunk in bambi . .. flower girl is doing well, eyes still look bad, but they get a bit better every day. vet said today it could take months for her eyes to clear up completely. how do you foster a kitty for months, and then give it back up for adoption??? just thinking about it makes me sad . . .
