  1. Awful. Just awful. I used to think pay toilets were the epitome of hitting you when you're down. I'm very proud to have one major credit card with a 0 balance, from my local credit union. Took us -years- to get to the point where we don't use credit cards anymore and I want to KEEP it that way if at all possible.

  2. It is so wrong to punish those who use their cards responsibly to cover those who don't and to cover the banks inability to run their own companies responsibly

  3. This isn't really anything new, most cards used to have annual fees unless you carried a large balance. Sounds like a return to the old ways.

Also did you know it hurts your credit score to NOT have/use credit cards? The score looks at responsible use of credit cards as a plus and your score will increase over not having/using any credit cards.

  4. Ditto Trufflesmom, Was so surprised when I found that out last year!

  5. It's pretty ridiculous, they get billions of tax payer dollars and it's not enough. Frankly since my divorce I have started practicing what my grandfather preached, and he owned a 140 acre farm. If I don't have the cash to pay for it then I don't need it.

  6. Amen CCM ! I have one credit card, use it only for gas as I get air miles. It's about the only way I can afford to get to Hawai'i ..lol
My Mom used to say the same thing... if you don't have the cash you don't buy it until you do. The only exception was a house and a car. And I'm saving to pay cash for my next car - waaaay in the future.

  7. Last year, I finally paid off all 3 of my credit cards. What happened next? Two of the accounts were closed 'due to inactivity' (I didn't charge anything for about 4 months). I have one credit card left and I charge all of my gas on it just so they don't close that acct. either. I like to have it in case of an emergency. Pathetic, huh? You do the responsible thing and end up getting punished for it.

  8. Exactly FH - feels like punishment, doesn't it ?!

  9. I did not use any credit cards for years as I dug myself out of a huge credit hole. I cancelled cards as I paid them off until I was down to one card. Then I did not use that once I was out of debt until I heard that it hurt your credit score not to use the card. So now I use it for anything big. I signed up for their Thankyou points program thinking about travel and found out I can get store gift cards for the points. I love that!

I still never put anything on the card unless I have the money to pay it when I buy it.

  10. Agreed with the end of the article--I only have one card, through a credit union, and really it's only a debit card.

  11. It's almost impossible to not have a credit card--most car rental companies want it to guarantee if you wreck the car. They don't take debit cards. The poor bank is losing money on people who don't pay interest, so they want to make up for it by charging fees. We will pay higher taxes for bailing the banks out and they kick us in the a**!
