Don't know how but our kitten who at the time 7 months old got out, when we got her back we thought all was well.. only to later find out she had um.. found a mate. (She's a strictly indoor cat, btw) She had her gorgeous babies 3 days ago now, and we're scrambling to figure out how to help her care for them since she seems kind of restless about it. We have a heating pad set up in half of the box they're all in, she's nursing 3 of them regularly but the 4th seems to have troubles latching on. We started him/her on KMR yesterday, and found him/her latching on her more often (YAY!). We still have been supplementing, but I noticed s/he'd been getting dark pink around the mouth.. so I did the skin elasticity test on the neck skin and it went back very slowly. Off to the store we went for pedialyte (unflavored) and gave him/her one ml of it so far.. how often can we give him/her the pedialyte and can we mix it with premixed KMR?
And one last question, how do we keep mommy cat from rolling over onto the babies, or rolling over and knocking them off while they're nursing?
Thanks so much in advance!

Jenni, I don't know about newborn kittens but someone should come on who has a clue and can help. Have you taken her to the vet yet or called about the new babies and young mom, if not that might be a good choice too. You sound like you are well on your way to helping Mom and kits as she is inexperienced and probably scared too.

Hi, Jenni, I'm sorry, I can't really answer your questions but if you are taking your cat to the vet with her bleeding, you should ask him/her these questions too. Also, you should talk to him about eventually getting your cat spayed because as soon as she's weaned these kittens, she could get out and get pregnant again (and she will be trying to do just that!) Good luck! I'll add some websites you may find helpful:

Just like any young new mom it can take a kitty a little while to get the hang of it all. You are kind to lend her support and she and the babies should have a vet checkup asap, just for well being. Don't worry about her rolling on them she won't crush them, or standing up when they are nursing and leaving them for a while, they do that. The heat pad may be making the box too warm for her if it is an enclosed box, and that may be making her restless. When our Mali had her kits she was only six or seven months old (a rescue from a sad situation) she took very good care of the babies and yes they have to learn to grab on to their favorite teet when they can. We used an enclosed box with towels for bedding and cut a door in the side that Mali could come and go thru. The door sill was four inches high so the babies couldn't get out for a few weeks. Good luck to you and to them.
