Hi! I have a wonderful and super petite four year old cat named Max. Max lives with big Cat spooky who is two years of age. We have had Max longer than Spooky, and Max has always had this problem....Max likes to grind up his poop and pee in the litter box. He goes in the corners/sides, along the wall of the box and then mashes it up. Max is in the box for a good amount of time, clawing the box,-(really noisy)...Also, he kicks up so much litter, getting everywhere, even though we have this big igloo type box. Since Max is a grinder, the liter can't really do its job and control odor, and unfortunately we have a smaller apartment. Since Max has always had these behaviors, I know it has nothing to do with Spooky. Any suggestions?

Does Max seem to be a high energy or anxious kitty most of the time? Does he have scratching posts to claw on? Are you able to trim his claws regularly? I wonder if putting "Soft Paws" on his claws might help with this problem. They are soft, blunt tips that are glued onto each claw. If he is doing this because of anxiety, you might try Feliway as a way of calming him so he doesn't feel the urge to claw as much.

Also My cat Max gets what we call "pooplets". I'm totally confused by this because he spends so much time in the box that you would think that he would insure that he was free of poop debris. My cat Spooky, only half the time covers his poop. I know that since Spooky is a larger cat that its advised for the box not to be covered, but we have to since Max kicks up the liter like crazy! Please help. I don't want to wake up to cat bathroom aroma any longer!

Max is way high strung. Super anxiety ball. He does not like male strangers and will hiss but then rub himself on him. He gets scared and jumps three feet in the air if you drop a Kleenex. He has been known to climb walls. Wow. I never thought that his poop grinding was due to anxiety. Max does have areas to scratch on, but no, we don't trim their nails. I will look into the soft paws and Feliway. Thanks again! -
Sounds like Max is a long-haired cat or may be too old or heavy to clean up after himself in the rear. If he is long-haired you could carefully trim away the fur where the pooplets get hung up or have a professional groomer do this. Baking soda in the kitty litter might help with the odor problem. Do you think an automated litter box might work? It would solve the problem with Spooky not covering after he poops, but some cats won't go near that kind of box.
Frequent scooping of the litter box may be called for. How many litter boxes do you have?
Getting the claws trimmed regularly may help with the scratching problem. Cats scratch objects to shed the sheath on their nails which comes off naturally.

Max is short haired. He looks like a Siamese tabby mix. He is about four years old. We got him when he was two. I have a feeling that the pooplets just come out of his anus at random, opposed to being caught on his fur. We have only one box, and I clean it daily, sometimes every other day. I will get his nails done professionally. I kinda just assumed that trimming nails was for dogs. Thanks for the brilliant advice! -

You might want to get at least one more litter box. The rule of thumb according to folks on TDK is to have one litter box per cat plus one more.
