Today in History (Oct 26)

(4 posts)
  1. Today in 1825, the famous Erie Canal opened in Upstate New York, linking the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, creating a water route to the midwestern United States. Construction took 15 years and an immense outlay of money by the New York governor, DeWitt Clinton.

Also today in 1881, the most famous gunfight of the Old West — the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral — took place in Tombstone, Arizona. The storied fight between lawmen and outlaws would become an iconic moment for Wild West culture.

  4. Irony of the moment:

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral did not take place at the O.K. Corral.
