  1. I know that it's been a while since I've posted on here. We are finally in Oregon and all moved in! And just today I got some GREAT news!

So I just got off of the phone with NBC's Gillian Lusins regarding Melvin's photo that was on the Jay Leno show without them asking.

I'm nearly shaking with excitement about this phone call!

Gillian told me that although they cannot do anything on the show, NBC would like to make a page up to raise money for animal causes! All in Melvin's name!

This means that Melvin will have his own fund-raising page for different causes (we have to choose a few) for an entire month starting on November 1st! We would like ALL of you to post up a cause that you feel is worthy and why. I'd like a cause that helps all animals, but doesn't have that much publicity (although I love Best Friends, they have a LOT of publicity, so let's give the little guys a chance!).

This is AMAZING news and I'm darn near in tears that NBC was so gracious to give us this chance to help others!

For those of you that have a Facebook, the link to the original note (in case you'd like to share this post or just add Melvin as a friend) is here

  2. I know I'm jumping the gun here but, after I reaqd your post, the first thing I thought of was the memorial that many TDKers help set up in honor of our wonderful...Jerry/Chester.

Concatulations on hitting the Big Time Melvin!! Meow!

  3. The only thing that I have to make sure about is that the charity that they post is 501 (c) 3, or tax deductible.

Is that one tax deducible? I would love to add it to the list, if so!

  4. As far as I recall it is. Some of the TDKers have pics of the place & several have even gone to visit the place.

In fact...If you go to the main page on this site,it has a link to Chester's Place.

  6. Glad to help.

  7. How about animal disease research labs and hospitals. FIV, FeLk...

Posted 2 years ago by ailuromaniac #

  8. How about Alley Cat Allies?

Posted 2 years ago by Bellantara #

  9. Animal disease research is a great idea!

Any organization/s that specialize in research for animals with Melvin's problem and/or other "orpahn" feline and/or other animal diseases?

Are there any major reputable groups, especially national in scope, that help fund spay and neuter programs?

Also, how about Cats on the Kings rescue?

  10. I REALLY like Cats on the Kings.
And I am looking for mass groups that help out, but they all seem to have a lot of funding already. We're looking for those small ones that need a bit more help than the big guys.
My personal choice is http://www.purebredcatrescue.org/ due to the closeness they have to Melvin (bringing in animals that were used as a breeding project and spending thousands of dollars to make them well again).
Alley Cat Allies is another favorite of mine, as I worked with them (well, my grandma did and I helped out) long ago. Trapping and fixing was what got me my first REAL cat, Janse.

  11. I also want to help out other animals, though. Dogs, ferrets, horses, pigs, etc. I know that there is a rescue for all of those outcast "teacup" pigs out there, but I can't seem to remember the name. Does anyone know who I'm thinking of, by chance?

  12. The Specialty Purebred Rescue Group in your link sounds like a very worth and underfunded cause. And given that Melvin's medical problems are from being a purebred teacup, having the website page help fund a group that specializes in rescuing and helping pruebreds that tend to have extra special needs would be a very good synergy.

  13. I am a big fan of Alley Cat Allies as well. I think they do some really great stuff.

  14. Good for Melvin's fame! He will help many others now and it sounds like some great suggestions have been made.

  15. I'd like to mention another that has very special personal meaning to me. If not for 1 of our own TDKers (Sylvester & Mia's Mom-SMM),I would never have known of them but, they helped me when I was in a deep, dark place & overwhelmed w/ferals I'd rescued & couldn't afford or find homes for. They saved 7 furrbabies that would almost certainly have ended up being euthanized. They found homes for all 7.
They're called: Humanimal Cat Resources & are located in the Redwood City,Ca. area.
I'll never forget them...ever. And also remember how Big their hearts were but,how much they desperately needed funding for their plight...which was to save & find homes for all animals that for 1 reason or another, did not have one. They soooo deserve some recognition & help of their own.

And I agree...Cat on the Kings is also great. Altho they were overwhelmed themselves w/animals & couldn't help me at the time...I spoke personally to Lynn, the young woman who created it & she is such a warm & loving person.

  16. OMG!!! MM that is fantastic!!! You do so much for animals in need and Melvin's sweet little face is your spokesmodel! I'm a big fan of all the organizations that have been mentioned above..

If NBC really wanted to boost their ratings they would have a special on Animals in Need and have Melvin as the host.

  17. MM, there is one organization that I thought of that hasn't been mentioned, www.givesomelife.org they sponsor vets and assistants to travel and set up free spay/neuter clinics.

  18. I'm going to have a hard time deciding which to go with!

And hopefully this will all be a success, not really for Melvin, but for all the charities that are chosen, plus many many more.

Along with this I have been working hard on getting a site together that will use ebay to raise money for charities as well as fun contests, I just need a proper website and I'm not the best at web design. Just gotta find someone cheap enough.

Thank you all for the kind words! I'm VERY excited about this.
I think it will be fun to have a page telling Melvin's story on a big website like NBC's. The thing is, if the page gets enough traffic and does well enough, it's a possibility that it will become a permanent member and possibly move on! That is our initial goal!

  19. This is a really neat idea MM, I don't have any charities to recommend.

For your own website - are there any college students around that might design you a site as a class project?

  20. This is very exciting! How cool that Melvin's picture was on the Jay Leno Show!! Hahaha...I missed that one..darn it! There are SOOOOO many different groups that help animals today..Most of them are not large and don't receive much publicity. I was wondering about the group of truckers who transport animals from state to state from different shelters to save them from euthanizing. I can't think of their name right now (alzheimer attack)! Can anyone else remember the group I'm thinking of?

    Found it! http://www.operationroger.rescuegroups.org/

  21. That's a good one, Karen, as well as Purebred Rescue and Alley Cat Allies, who gives you their flyers for free to promote TNR in your own community. Yay for Melvin!

  22. I posted an alchemy request on Etsy, but they removed it. :/ They didn't tell me why, though. Just said it was against the rules.

And these are greats! Also, Karenopa, here's a screenshot of the moment!

Also, I'm posting up all of these links on my blog: http://mouchois.blogspot.com/2009/10/nbc-update.html

They are ALL great and should all be checked out!
    Thank you everyone!

  23. This is so cool - another option could be one of the organizations that trains service animals - usually shelter dogs - to assist the blind, those with seizure disorders, etc.... The transport groups are great too - the pilots group, and the truckers...

When the site is ready to launch you should send an email to Ellen DeGeneres - she might mention it on her show. She is big on animal charities!

    Congrats to you and Melvin!
