  1. Today in 1858, American politician, New York governor and United States president Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City. Roosevelt was also a Medal of Honor recipient for leading the Rough Riders in the Spanish American War, and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate for his role in ending the Russo-Japanese war.

    Also today in 1932, American poet Sylvia Plath was born in Boston. Author of the semi-biographical novel The Bell Jar, which showed her descent into depression, she is known for her intensely personal poetry and use of metaphors in her work.
