My little baby sumi is getting spayed tomorrow. I can't believe she's 6 months old. She is utterly adorable in every way, and I am sorry we have to have this operation, but she's not in heat yet, and I think it's better to get it out of the way now. Of course we are worried that her unique personality will alter, but I think it stands more chance of remaining intact if I go ahead with the spay before she comes into season. Think of her tomorrow please TDKers. So tough on kittens, dealing with teething AND spaying at the same time. I know it's the right thing to do, and my favourite vet, Ruth, is operating, but she's still such a baby, jumping, running, playing, purring and eating everything put in front of her. I'm off this week so I can look after her when she comes home tomorrow night.

sumi getting spayed
(64 posts)-
Eliniki...your doing the best thing ever for Sumi. It's very rare I've ever seen the personality change after spaying of a female. My Hissy is the exception because she'd had 5 litters before caught & had been on her own for so long before the surgery. But, her daughter Prettygirl (outdoor feral), had her 3 Muskateers (she had 4 but, her 4th was killed by a racoon) before she was spayed & she became an even sweeter girl than she already was.
Best Wishes being sent for Sumi & Meowmy. -
Good job Eleniki! Jeff and I have had a little female about the same age as your Sumi who's been hanging here for a couple of months and we've got her into the vet today to have her spayed. We named her Gypsy and she's very people friendly so I think she was dumped here by someone. We'd like to find her a home after this but suspect we may have just added number 5 to our cat family. =(
-
Cool, and I love her name! Hope little Gypsy is ok when you pick her up! She'll need lots of tlc - someone told me liquid arnica 30c is good for pain after a big op like this, and also a little milk thistle to help her recover from the anaesthetic. I've asked for Propofol, as it's gentler on the system, though it's more expensive. It upsets me looking at little innocent sumi, blissfully ignorant of what's ahead tomorrow. She hates going to the vet, of course..
-
In all the neuters & spayings I've taken in over the yrs.,I've never been able to finance any pain meds for any of them. I hope none ever experienced too much pain. And the only 1 that seems to show any resentment is Hissy. I have a feeling it has to do w/her being Siamese (just a bit on the sassy side). I do relish in the fact that I got to pet her several times while she was still sedated. lol.
-
I think it's nice Eleniki if you have something for Sumi's post surgical pain but I'm afraid our little girl (like my other four) will have to go it a la naturale as we are barely able to cough up the necessary funds to co-pay for this little girl. I figure though that my part in paying for this now will well come back in preventative would-be ferals of the future to feed and care for. =)
Hahah..Susie..Siamese probably has ALOT to do with Ms. Hissy's stubborn aloofness. Shady shows his siamese perplexity constantly. Hahah..He's constantly torn with should I...shouldn't I...no way...yes way...Finally he'll plop down into my lap of luxury for awhile then split and return to catch me if you can! =D

It's just a given and must be done...unless you want little kits running around in a little while in case she gets out for a nite on the town with "Tom" the neighborhood cat!(Had it done to Dot after bringing her in with her litter/kits. She was quiet for a couple of days...then back to her fun self again!)
-
Tequila is also getting spayed tomorrow. I feel your pain! My heart always breaks for them afterwards, because they're in so much pain. I swear, I will camp out in the vet's office tomorrow until he gives me some pain meds for her, I dont care how much it costs. Tequila is such a tiny baby (REALLY bad neglect and nutrition when she was a kitten), and such a sweet girl, she doesn't deserve to suffer.
-
How old is Tequila?(gorgeous name) I don't want to complicate things too much with more medication on top of the anaesthetic, which her body will already be coping with, which is why I'm getting arnica for her, and milk thistle, natural remedies. But if she is clearly in pain after tomorrow night, I will have something from the vet on standby. We'll be thinking of baby Tequila too!

I think she's somewhere close to 6 months now - she's in the full swing of teething, and she's getting that crazy-cat look in her eyes (you know the werecat look?) so it must be almost time for her to go on heat. The people who saved her from getting smashed on the highway fed her soup bones and porridge untill I persuaded them to let her go up for adoption - they meant well, they just didn't know any better, but she's a very tiny kitty now. She looks like she's 12 weeks old. Eleniki - your avatar is so pretty! Who is that?
-
Well the avatar I had yesterday was Lolita, my darling old lady who passed in May '08, aged over 18, with me since she was rescued at the age of 6 weeks. But I just changed my avatar to sumi. Yes, teething hit sumi hard too, and they're still breaking through. She was in such pain with loose teeth 2 weeks ago that she stopped eating but her vet pulled the troublesome tooth out with her fingers and sumi's appetite came surging back! I think sumi is smallish, but it's hard to say - she has good weight on her now, after a major set-back at 11 weeks when she was very ill and stopped eating for a week. I love tiny cats, Skyron, even if Tequila is probably a bit stunted...porridge wouldn't have done it for her nutritional needs, sad to say.
-
Thanks Feral. Sumi is home now, and doing nicely. She growled a little continuous growl when she was brought out to me, because she was just stressed by all the noise (one little dog had been yippiing non-stop the whole day), but as soon as I got her in the quiet car, she stopped. She is still her gorgeous affectionate little self, pushing her head into my hand as soon as I reached in to her in her carrier. She has eaten now she's home, and even peed in her litter box. Needless to say, miso is upset, and hissing at her strange smell, despite having spent much of the day looking for sumi in all her usual haunts! I've rubbed sumi with an old teeshirt of her daddy's, so I'm sure it'll all settle down tomorrow. Hope Gypsy and Tequila are doing as well as my little sum-sum. Hugs to them..

I just checked out the Catster pages. Sumi is absolutely adorable and a real little camera ham. And I absolutely love the picture of Miso sleeping upside down in your lap. What a handsome little lady she grew into.

Well, sumi ate plenty last night, and then stayed under a chair in our bedroom all night. She wouldn't lie down, probably because she's so tender. Now today, she's eaten some more, but she's not herself. She's running around the house, clearly distressed, eyes wide and going at her wound frantically. She allowed me to give her some arnica crushed in water with her syringe which she loves, for the pain, but I'm worried about her. This behaviour suggests pain, poor little mite.
-
Eleniki, my Libs pulled out her spaying stitches twice, not I think, because of the pain but because she was feral and the vet said some cats just won't tolerate stitches. (She got out of her Elizabethan collar twice to do it.) Poor little Sumi, she might need an Elizabethan collar like Libs was forced to wear. Is she actually succeeding in biting her stitches out?
-
No, I wouldn't take it Jcat, because I know she would back around the place in terror and half choke herself. I'm pretty upset right now because I allowed the vet to talk me into letting sumi have a metacam painkiller injection, her second in two weeks, and I've just done further research and found the most appalling horror stories about this drug. I'm beating myself up because I knew it wasn't good, had been advised to ask for an alternative, but the vet was so convincing (not Ruth, she operated but this one took sumi in) that I gave her the go-ahead. Now I'm terrified that sumi will start to exhibit signs of toxicity/renal failure like so many other cats did. There's a site called 'Metacam kills cats' that I only found this morning. The FDA does not recommend more than one shot of metacam, and sumi has had two in two weeks. I'm fairly in bits here.
-
Oh my, that doesnt sound very good. I hope everything goes well for sumi. If she's still eating well and everything I wouldn't worry too much, just watch out for excessive water drinking. Tequila is doing very well :) She didn't want to eat last night, she just slept the whole day and night away. When she woke up this morning she was back to her old self again - eating, jumping, climbing, playing with her brothers . . . The strange bit is the fact that Tiigger is now very depressed (I think if cats had boyfriends/true loves, Tiigger would be Tequila's). He sniffed at her, and started licking the wound on her tummy, and snuggled up to her, but I took him away when he continued the licking - I'm scared she's still too sore. Now Tiigger is hiding behind a door, with his face in the corner, and he doesn't want to get up or eat or do anything . . .

There's a cute picture of Tequila and Tiigger on Tequila's catster page:

That's a lovely picture Skyron! They're so fond of each other! I'm surprised Tigger didn't make strange with Tequila when she came back from the vet - miso is still hissing at sumi's new smell, but it's getting less. sumi is eating, and has just pooped normally, and slept in front of the heater all afternoon, but she has bouts of pain, and she is behaving oddly. She is running around the house, as if she wants to get away from the pain, and hiding, which she normally doesn't do ever. She is still frantically licking and biting at her stitches at these times. But I'm continuing with the arnica, and I think it's having an effect. It's just when it wears off, she gets distressed. She's not herself. It's a big op. What painkiller did your vet use on Tequila? She seems to have sailed through this! She's a lovely little thing - I love the leggy adolescent look they have at this age!
-
The vet didn't use any extra pain killers on Tequila. He said the tinier the kitty, the easier they take the op. That being said, she only has two stitches and a 3 cm scar, which I'm sure helps a lot. Maybe Sumi is allergic to her stitches? I had surgery once where I was allergic to the stitches - the tissue around the stitches became inflamed, it felt like someone had set me on fire, and the itching nearly drove me mad . . .
-
Thank you Jcat. She's a bit depressed today I think, just laying low and sleeping. Maybe this is the sleep she should have had immediately after she came home, but didn't because she was too stressed. I'll keep you posted. I'm taking a urine sample if I can and bringing it down to the vet - she said they can tell a lot even from a tiny bit, and it's the kidneys that metacam affects. Syron, I hope Tigger is ok, poor little chap. Has he come out from his corner?
-
He is out of his corner, but now he's mad at me for some reason. I think he was hoping to father Tequila's kittens . . . He wont talk to me, he walks away every time I go near him, if I put him on my lap he just jumps off again. I think he thinks I'm the reason why they're gonna have to adopt babies now. I dont think he even realised that he and Sam joined the castrati last month. They got out of the carriers and ran straight out the door the minute I brought them home. There is nothing as good as a big garden with lots of trees and shrubs to keep kitties happy & occupied :)

Pickle is going to be "done" next Friday - if I can catch her. She lets me stroke her sometimes now, but goes completely beserk if I try to pick her up could be fun putting her in the basket! Oh joy!!

Pickle sounds rather feral? In that situation I've always found cat traps to be the best solution. I always rent a trap for a week from my vet, starve the kitty for a day or two, and then leave some nice smelly fish in there. Works like a charm every time. And you dont have to get the kitty into a basket, you just take them in to the vets in the trap, and they sedate them with a dart pole, and from there on it's plain sailing. If you dont like the idea of a trap, I also once had to use a sedative in order to get hold of a cat. In SA its called ACP paste - its a homeopathic sedative thats really strong, its a green paste that you mix into their food. The cats dont mind the taste of it in the food, and it doesnt knock them out, it just persuades them to co-operate somehow. I'd been trying to catch that cat for MONTHS with no success (vet said he'd never seen such a wild feral in his 40 years of practice), many bite wounds and no cat to show for it, the vet gave me the paste, which I gave to the kitty. She ate it, I waited 15 minutes, and then she started looking a little loopy - I went to pick her up, and she looked at me with terrified eyes, gave a soft little meow, and hissed, and then she was in the carrier. No bites, no scratches, it was amazing. And as murphy would have it, she was the last female in the colony, so I never needed my new-found wonder paste again. hope it helps you?
-
Thank you. I don't know if we can get the wonder green paste in the UK .....
Last time I had to take her to the vet I just caught her and got somewhat bitten for my trouble. I'm sure we'll get there by hook or by crook.
Pickle was described as semi-feral when I got her from the animal shelter. She was 12 weeks old and definitely feisty. Since then she has settled down quite a lot - if you discount the shredded curtain linings and the wrecked living room..... ;)

Got a pee sample from sumi and they took a reading - normal kidney function, so she's processing the metacam without any harmful effects so far. I'm reassured that she's just having a tough time with her spay. She's a sensitive little soul and was quite traumatised I think. She's still staying in her bed, sleeping all the time, though she is eating, and tonight for the first time, she purred, and is very affectionate again. I think the first 24 hours after the op, she was having a stress reaction, running, hiding, licking, instead of sleeping, and now she's finally having the rest she needs.
I do hope Pickle goes into the box without too much hysteria, PM, and that she has a smooth operation. It is a big operation, let's face it - if it was us, we'd be bed-ridden for weeks! Poor Tigger, Skyron - I think he smelt the vet off Tequila and it's made him a bit insecure in his world..
