Clipping Nails

(9 posts)
  1. Just got my first kitten and I am not sure how far back I can clip her nails. What is the general rule?

    Thanks.

  2. Look at the nail closely. You should be able to see the blood vessel in it. DO NOT clip the blood vessel. If you aren't comfortable, just clip the little pointy bit off. That's all you are really trying to do - get rid of the sharp point. If you can't see the vessel, or aren't sure what you are looking for, ask the vet to show you.

And welcome to TDK, the furriest place on the internet.

  3. Thanks. I will try that. I can see the red part of her nail, which I am assuming is the blood vessel, but I will just stick with clipping the point. How often should this be done?

  4. We do our cats (4 of them) about every other week. I think kittens grow their nails faster. Check them weekly and when she has succeeded in sharpening them to a point again, clip it off.

Does she have a scratching post? That helps.

  5. She has a scratching box. I am going to get her a post though, because that is not enough for her. She is starting to tear up the carpet ... not good.

  7. I also just take of the tips every few weeks. I would never be able to forgive myself if I accidentally cut too deep. Gives me the chills just thinking about it.
