Today in History (Oct 30)

(4 posts)
  1. Today in 1938, Orson Welles' adaptation of H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds was broadcast on radio, setting off a panic in some areas. The show's format was made to mimic a traditional radio newscast, and fooled many listeners into thinking that an alien invasion was taking place.

Also today in 1885, poet Ezra Pound was born in Idaho. He would eventually emigrate to various places in Europe, writing many poetry collections that exemplified the Modernist movement and would influence later poets of the Beat Generation.

  2. Thanks for the info Dee. I didn't know that about when the broadcast was. I only know I didn't recall hearing of it on the radio. That's because I was only days old, being born in 10/1938~~

  4. When I asked my father about the broadcast he said his little town was lucky, only a few homes even had a radio and they didn't have it turned on that evening.
