  1. Interesting article.

However, I've noticed these truisms from my own life:
    1. Overweight women run in my family.
    2. Some of the overweight women have lost weight -- when they decided to do so.
    3. Some of them decided to lose weight when their doctors told them they would die young, proving they were fat but not so fit.
    4. Diet, exercise, and a postive attitude worked to change their lives.
    5. These ladies were also a fairly scary and very determined. If they decided to change their lives, they did. Period.
    6. Something similar happened to me. This past January, my doctor told me the same message that was given to two aunts, two grandmothers, and one second cousin: change or die young.
    7. I joined Weight Watchers and the local gym.
    8. I changed my eating habits and my lifestyle. Drastically.
    9. I lost 44 pounds so far, and I have 23 more to lose.
    10. I am happier and healthier than I have been in years.

My grandmothers lived into their 90's, my 82 year-old-aunt dropped her Tae Bo class a few months ago for a Ladies' Boxing Class, and all of them were/are healthy, with vastly improved appearance and a vitality that was incredible.

My second cousin, who did not lose weight or start exercising, dropped dead at the age of 55 of a massive heart attack. Her husband and children miss her terribly.

MORAL: YOU determine how much you're going to weigh, how good you're going to look and feel. You may not end up looking like Tyra Banks or Jennifer Anniston, but you will wind up looking and feeling like a much better YOU.

Decide, determine, and do. No one else can change you, and nothing can stop you once you decide to change.

  2. I used to live in the US (in New Orleans) for about 5 yrs and noticed how the portions of the food they serve are just enormous!

I don't believe the problem is simply what kind of food we eat, but the amount of it. In Montreal there are far less people who are overweight simply because the serving portions are much smaller.

When I visited family in D.C., I horrified to go to this restaurant that had a Texas sized menu, and when I ordered chicken pot pie, I was expecting a small 6 inch dish, but the waitress came out and gave me a pie size 10 incher, 2 inches tall!! Or when I visited Las Vegas, I looked at the brownie squares and they were the size of CD cases. Nobody should be eating portions that big, they should be serving those brownies at 1/4 of the size.

If you follow the French, you pay a lot for very little food, but you eat well and you eat quality food. The solution is quality, not quantity.

  3. Dahlia makes a good point about portion size. Hubby and I have started splitting entrees at restaurants because the portions are so big. My 83 year old mother and her friend would go out and whatever they ordered, they would eat 1/3 of it and take the rest home for two more meals.

The best success story I know of is my friend Val. She weighed over 250 pounds. When she got to the point in her life where she was ready to make a change she drastically dut down her portion size and adopted a boston terrier from a rescue organization. She not only got companionship but she got a motivation to walk 2 or 3 times a day. It took her a year but she lost 120 pounds and has now kept it off for 3 years. I wish I could get into the same mindset.

  4. Everything in moderation is my mantra...with exercise added to the mix! I was a chubby child so am well aware of the diet=portion/exercise/good choices! Thanks for the thread, Dee.

  5. Very good points! Moderation and portion control, and throw in some exercise -- you've got a healthier cat lover than before!

  6. Guess I'll just die fat and happy. :)

  7. You're not fat, sweetie. And the emphasis is on dying happy! And at an advanced old age.

I just want to live long enough to be a complete and total embarrassment to my son.

  8. I once thought of losing weight for my cats because if I die who will look after them? I used to be a total gym rat and weighed in at a sleek 145 (sleek for me anyway). I'll never be that small again.
