  1. Hello!

I'm new to the forum :)

I figured this would be the best place to ask my kitten questions since I'm new at this.

I feel terrible in leaving my cat alone while I'm at work, but I make sure to play with him for an hour before work, about 20 mins for lunch and I spend most of my time with him after 5pm. I walk to work, so he usually spends time alone at around 4 hour intervals.

Every time I see him, he's always full of energy and constantly wants to play. Even playing with him for 2hrs, he doesn't stop, he just keeps going.

I've only had him for 5 days so far, and at night, I used to place him in a box so as to make sure he's not going around my apartment doing things he's not supposed to (scratching my futon, chewing on wires). I have a bed for him to sleep in but I'm not sure how to train him to sleep on it yet. I'm actually half allergic to cats, so I can't afford him to sleep with me on my bed at night.

How do I get him to be sweet and cuddly when he's on my lap? He only does so about twice a day when I praise him and pet him lovingly (once in the morning and when I come back from work). Otherwise he takes my hands and my lap as a playfield. I've tried giving him time outs in his box when he's bitten, scratched or clawed me, but I'm not sure how long it's suppose to sink in for him that he's not supposed to do that.

Sorry for the long post! I have a lot of questions and I want to make sure my kitty is raised happy and healthy.

    Thanks!

  2. Welcome to TDK Dahlia! Kittens are like toddlers, full of energy. Make sure he has plenty of kitty toys to play with while your gone, but he will still want to play with you when you return. There are other members here that can give you good suggestions on teaching him do's and don'ts but kittens will be playfull. Has he been fixed yet? If not he will settle down some afterwards, but still be very active through his kitten stage.

  3. Thanks 2BPurring, I plan on buying more toys after work, he does have a couple of them but I think he needs a whole lot more to keep his little paws busy.

He's too young to be neutered, I'd have to wait until he's 5-6 months (which is a long time from now).

I was just curious as to how many hours should a kitten spend playing so that he'll be good for the night when I go to sleep. I heard him play this morning at around 6am, I usually get up around 7:45am. If he's still full of energy even after long periods of play time, I'm starting to think that he's really bored during the day :/

  4. My new kitten, she is the same. Very Hyper. She sleeps in my room. She will play on her own when she is not around me, then I play with her until she is worn out, sometimes I play with her 3 to 4 hours. Once I make all lights off in the room at night, she will go on the floor where I have blankets and pillows of her own set up for her and she will sleep all night.

I am busy during the day, So i play with her from 7pm till 10pm. (she is very very active around then def). Once all lights are off she knows its time to sleep. I say keep playing until he is worn out or play with him for bout 3 hours.

  5. He may be sleeping when you are away from the house. Then he has lots of energy for play when you get home.

  6. Thanks Huskymix! Ok good, I was hoping that it was normal for someone to play with their cat for 3+hrs in order to wear them out.

Now it's just a question of making him sleep in his own bed and not claw his way up to my bed to sleep!

  7. He might never sleep in the bed---cats have their own minds! I would put something you've worn into the bed so it has your scent--that's about the best you can do. As he gets older he will need less playtime. We usually recommend getting two kittens the same time so they occupy each other. As far as toys, only put down a couple at a time and change them each day so he won't get bored. My Patches was 3 years old before she became a lap-sitter.
