Halloween freaks me out

  1. There. I've said it. Halloween freaks me out. It didn't always: I used to love it, thinking it a fun time to dress up and go to Halloween parties and gorge on candy. Now since I've grown as a Christian, I'm not so sure about celebrating a holiday whose original purpose was to pacify spirits, not all of whom may have been good. I wonder, do the children who wander around every October 31 know that back in the '70s (when their parents were children) demented people were putting razor blades, needles, and poison in Halloween candy (another reason I only trick-or-treated once in my life)? I also wonder, will celebrating the holiday endanger my soul? Will evil spirits drag me to, well, 'the smoking section of Eternity'? Will I be forgiven for having celebrated the holiday in the past? I know, I sound a bit off the wall, but these questions never occured to me before. I'm already catching heat on a social networking site (at least, a few months ago) for merely acknowledging that I am a Christian (to the point where I will not even reveal my faith, for fear that I am treated like an imbecile); am I doomed to be alone because I don't go with the flow? Am I consigned to a lonely life because I no longer look forward to dressing up in costume (many of which would offend so many groups of people I wonder why people even bother dressing up) and celebrating the supposed disappearance of the border between the spirit world and the physical world? I so want to fit in, but am I just too darn odd?

  2. Lol,Vicky I feel the same way.The only decorations I put up at are a thanks for the harvest type stuff. Cornucopia, horn of plenty, corn, etc. I don't put up any halloween type decorations. When I was a child it was much more innocent,we dressed as nurses or cowboys or ghosts in a sheet. We didn't go to houses that had their lights off but in our neighborhoods nearly all did and we got loads of goodies. No apples or handmade stuff after the razor scare though.
I'm a Christian too and all these demons, warlords and undead skeeve me out. I put the candy out, when it's gone I turn the light off.

  3. Everyone has the right to feel about any holiday and celebrate it or not.

  4. I grew up in the 70s.. to me Halloween meant dressing up and Trick or Treating... It was innocent fun.
It sure seems to have gotten away from that with the elaborate and macabre "haunted houses"etc.

  5. I know our parish was putting on a monster party for the kids today, instead of being seen to support trick or treating and the whole Halloween thing.

  6. Vicki...Any social networking site that would give you heat for acknowledging your beliefs in Christianity is no network that I'd want to be a part of. When I was a child Trick or Treating was a safer thing for kids to do and to tell you the truth...I believe it's been only a few bad apples who have spoiled it for the kids of the 70's on up to now. It's very sad because frankly...kids don't give a second thought as to the whys of halloween...like kids of every generation it's just great fun to dress up, pretend and come back home to pour over the bounty of treats. Now I'm in a small town and there are very few participating but we always get some goodies to give to a few neighbor children who's parents know and trust us. Halloween is not a holiday that all people get into...it never has been and likely won't ever be so it's ok if you don't like it Vicki...It doesn't much mean alot to me either. =D

  8. Best part of Halloween for me these days are all the spook movies on tv. I watched 'Frogs' this am. Cheesy fun!

  9. What I don't understand is, why did the candy tamperers decide to mess with only my generation? I haven't heard a thing about candy or other Halloween goodies being tampered with since the '70s and early '80s. Come to think of it, why was my generation targeted for kidnapping, murder, child abuse, unsafe or no areas to play, and all sorts of other things that would strip away a child's childhood? No wonder we were known as Generation X: someone felt the need to 'X' us out. I hear older people speak highly and fondly of their childhoods, but I have few fond memories of mine (if I had one at all; I only remember bits and pieces of it): I remember watching a lot of TV and wondering if the world would blow up in nuclear war or end in 1999. Gee, 1999 was TEN YEARS AGO! Nothing happened except that the calendar changed; we were screwed out of hope for the future. I see why I have high school classmates who are grandparents now: they probably, if not consciously, wanted to have the most grown-up of experiences (becoming a parent) before the world was supposedly to end. I don't need ghost stories to scare me: 24-hour news does it sufficiently.

  10. I think there has been evil in the world since Adam & Eve. We tend to hear and remember the more outrageous example of evil. I was growing up during the time of the Cuban missile crisis, the Viet Nam war and all manner of other scary things. I worried about those things, but I also had very good memories from my childhood. Each generation has its own crises. I don't think any one generation has been singled out for kidnapping, murder, child abuse, etc. Sadly, those have always been with us.

I was raised Catholic. We had no problem enjoying Halloween. It has a religious aspect to it for some. It was All Saints Day on Nov. 1. What could be more Christian than honoring the saints? :)

  13. Cheri, I like the concept of a harvest party: it's wholesome, safe fun; children don't have to walk around in less-than-pleasant weather knocking on strangers' doors asking for candy, it's supervised, and you don't have the spiritually doubtful element that you have in Halloween since the harvest party celebrates the autumn holidays and paves the way for the winter ones.

  14. Vicki (huggs).... you have every right to feel the way you do, and don't any let anyone make you feel bad for believing (or not believing) a certain way....
..... I'm a Christian, grew up trick or treating, and raised my kids Christian, and we trick or treated...... our church too, celebrates it more like an October fest, and the costumes and candy were just a fun part of the hoopla..... an opportunity to "dress up" different than you normally are..... our church had a big family night supper, and the kids would parade around the tables when it was finished and the adults would drop candies in their bags from a big bowl on each table.... it was good wholesome family fun!
