Laika, the space dog: 52 years later

I had no idea that Laika (whose real name was Kudryavka, or Curly; Laika is a generic name for a series of husky-like dogs common in what was then the Soviet Union), the dog that entered outer space 52 years ago as the first Earth-born being to leave Earth's orbit and go where no Earth being had ever gone before, actually died mere hours after liftoff. I was under the impression that she came back to Earth alive. What disturbs me even more is that she was never meant to come back to Earth alive, as Sputnik 2 was not meant to be retrievable. If the then-Soviets thought she was disposable, might they have been thinking the same of its human cosmonauts?

  2. ugh.. i thought she came back too. It was really cold hw they could just send a trusting and lovable creature like that to her death without a care or concern. poor baby.

  3. Laika was placed in her shuttle on October 31, 1957 where she remained enduring very cold temps. until lift off at dawn November 3, 1957, she died 6 hours later. She suffered a terrible death and all for "humankind" It makes me sick still today to know that the russians did not care about her Welfare and quickly built her shuttle so that they could beat the americans in the space race...Ok !!! so they won at LAIKA's expense....
LAIKA you are a hero to me and I love you just like I love all domestic, farm, and other gentle creatures. When we all cross over, I will visit you at
rainbow . I am your biggest fan....
