Sorry if this has been asked before, but. The cat I mentioned earlier seems to be having problems with litter training. I went for a crystalline silica gel one, and tried to introduce the kitty to it... yet it seems to get obsessed with certain other parts of the house and takes litter the wrong way. First it was its sleeping basket, washing its cushioning etc. never really worked. Then it was the couch/bed and the blankets on it - washing them didn't work either (this problem still persists). Now it's the carpet under the coffee table - even if I catch it about to pee/poop and drag it to the litter, it stops doing whatever it is doing and goes back to the same spot. I made it pee/poop in the litter this way several times, but it either forgets about the litter, or tries to dig the plastic sides of the box, not the litter itself. I don't know what else to do, it's not smelling the pee/poop in there it would seem, I tried to imitate the digging motion with my fingers and its paws in the litter, it just doesn't catch up, instead tries to eat the litter if anything. Any advice?

Litter problem

Hey JCD..sorry i don't remember but where did you get your cat? A shelter? Maybe ask them what brand they used? A few things:
1) You can try putting litter down without the liner and changing litter types. There are a few types out there and maybe you jsut need to find one kitty likes. Sophie is on a litter that is pellets made of recycled newspapers. Some litters are saw dust pellets and etc. Some are scented, some aren't. You might just have to try a few until you find one kitty likes.2)Besides wash the area, you will also have to get rid of the scent. Even if you can't smell it, kitty will smell it. After washing either put vinegar on the spot or use an enzyme spray designed to break down the smell. You can get it at the local pet store.
3) Kitties also don't like to eat where the do their business so if there is a new spot she likes, put her food bowel right above the area after its been cleaned and tried.
4) there is also something called litter attract some of the other mommies have used and swear by.
5) Make sure you check with the vet to see if she has a UTI infection..sometimes that is why they don't go in their box
6) Try and praise kitty when she is done in her box..and not punish her when she goes somewhere else...kitty will only associate you being angry with her when she goes and try to hide going from you!

I recently had a kitten that had trouble getting used to the litter box despite her sisters catching on quickly. I bought "Kitten Attract" and while it did help a good deal and got her to use the box, she continued to use certain spots to eliminate. We've had the kittens pee on our bed several times which was never fun, but I think it was largely due to simple kitten accidents and maybe them being lazy/thinking the box in the living room was too far away.
You could try putting any poop it leaves elsewhere inside the litter box as a way to get the point across. But accidents may/may not be inevitable with kittens. Hope yours figures it out sooner than later.

Yes i forgot to mention you could try having a few litter boxes around. A friend of mine has two for her one cat..since kitty is too lazy to go from one floor to another floor and refuses to use a box if hasn't been scooped (which is hard if kitty goes while she is at work and wants to go again before she comes back)

The trouble is, once kitty has peed somewhere and, no matter how hard you clean it, she can still smell it, she will think it's all right to go back there. You will probably need to use an enzyme product (some of them come with black lights so you can actually see where kitty has peed) to get rid of the smell and then cover it with a litterbox or aluminium foil or something else to discourage her, at least until she forgets about it. Good luck!
