Today is Guy Fawkes Day, celebrated in England, New Zealand, and parts of Canada. Guy Fawkes was foiled while trying to detonate a gunpowder explosive in the Houses of Parliament on this day in 1605 — an assassination attempt on James I. Fawkes was one of a group of conspirators seeking to create political chaos in order to establish a new monarchy sympathetic to their cause.
Also today in 1857, American journalist Ida Tarbell was born. She is best known for her work The History of the Standard Oil Company, a piece of investigative reporting that would inspire an era in which many journalists — "muckrakers" — reported on corporate mismanagement and unethical practices.
