Today in History (Nov 05)

(3 posts)
  1. Today is Guy Fawkes Day, celebrated in England, New Zealand, and parts of Canada. Guy Fawkes was foiled while trying to detonate a gunpowder explosive in the Houses of Parliament on this day in 1605 — an assassination attempt on James I. Fawkes was one of a group of conspirators seeking to create political chaos in order to establish a new monarchy sympathetic to their cause.

Also today in 1857, American journalist Ida Tarbell was born. She is best known for her work The History of the Standard Oil Company, a piece of investigative reporting that would inspire an era in which many journalists — "muckrakers" — reported on corporate mismanagement and unethical practices.

  2. And Today in Strangeness:

On November 5, 1975, Travis Walton said he was abducted into a glowing disc-shaped object. Five co-workers allegedly witnessed Walton's body rising up in an intense beam of light.

On this day in 1954, Thomas Manners, responsible for keeping 800 clocks wound, got his smock caught in the mechanism of the great clock in the London Law Courts tower, and was strangled to death by the clock he'd tended for so many years.
