  1. Ok, so my kitty is a year and a half old and I got her when she was 8 weeks. She has always been a bit of a nut but I figured she would eventually calm down. WRONG! She's getting worse as time goes on! I can't take it anymore. She drives me NUTS! I love her so very much but holy cow! We play with her everyday and give her lots of love when she lets us. She is a tempermental princess and only wants to be pet and loved when she feels like it otherwise she bites (not hard, but just like a "back off" nibble).

Whenever we sit down to relax or eat, she goes crazy. She plays with the blinds, even if I leave them half open. I left them wide open all summer but it lets the heat out now that it's cold so I really can't do that. She refuses to stay off the kitchen table and knocks cups of water over all the time. We finally got her to stop going on the counter MONTHS ago but all of a sudden her new thing is to jump up there! She also refuses to cover her poop. She poops, jumps out and walks away leaving the whole place stinky. She was spayed a year ago. I am getting sick of the bad behavior! It almost seems like she does it on purpose to annoy us.

I am seriously considering making her an indoor/outdoor kitty but I am afraid to. She has her claws (which I forgot to mention she uses on all of our furniture!!!) and is a tough little cookie but I worry about her getting killed or lost :( I have tried everything... spray guns don't work on her (I think she thinks it's a game) and loud noises don't scare her. I don't want to be mad at her anymore! Help :(

  2. HAve you tried using Feliway for a calming effect? Cats are like humans, some just are hyper all the time and not much you can do about it. Have you considered getting a playmate for her, another cat either her age or a little younger and they can entertain themselves. As for covering her leavings with litter, well that too is an individual trait, some do and some don't....might want to consider one of the automatic litter boxes that rakes a few seconds after the cat leaves the box.

  3. Other people may disagree with me, and I hope they'll jump in to help you but, to be honest, nothing she's doing seems like anything other than normal mischievous kitty behaviour to me. Why is it so terrible that she plays with the blinds? I can understand that knocking things over is annoying but cups of water can easily be cleaned up and some kitties just are heedless/clumsy. I'm sure people will give you tips to stop her going on the counter but again, it's not worth tearing your hair out over. It's frustrating that she doesn't cover her poo but it's not the worst thing in the world. I think you need to chill out a little and try to enjoy her. Because, goodness, these will seem like the halcyon days if you ever have kids....

PS Double-sided tape might help on the counters and you could try Soft Paws for her claws.

  4. A while back I watch a show where a guy made a "kitty kennel" outside. If you had the space or yard to do so you could try that. It looked like a dog kennel with a top so the cat couldn't run off. If I had a yard I would so do it for my cats.

  5. Oh another thing is catnip, some cats get hyper of it so maybe if you have stuff with catnip in them you could take those a way from her and see if that helps.

  6. When she plays with the blinds she breaks the slats in half... she gets on the back of a chair in front of the windows and bats at them half way up the window. I want to get her a kitty friend but there isn't enough room for two kitties here. We are looking for a bigger place. I guess I'm just frustrated because growing up all the kitties we had were calm and friendly... she is just plain mean sometimes. But, she can be a sweetie too when she wants to. When she is sleepy she curls up in our laps and nestles her cute little face under our chins. The knocking over the cups thing isn't because she's clumsy, it's because she's sticking her paws in them and playing with the water, LOL. You're right, the poop thing isn't the worst thing, just annoying that's all.

  7. It is hard when all your kitties have been sweet and good and all of a sudden fate throws you a curveball in the shape of a holy terror. I can understand that. I guess I think that holy terrors are more amusing and interesting -- life is never dull with them. She sounds adorable and incorrigible to me, especially the putting her paws in the water and playing. And yes, infuriating that she breaks the blinds but I bet she's funny to watch and has a ball!

I see you've posted before about her. Did you try the scruffing her, gently lowering her head and hissing at her, like her mother would have done when she was a baby? Also, I think in one of your previous posts, you said she was a tortie. I'm afraid torties are notorious for 'tortitude'...

Two kittens will definitely tire each other out without you having to spend all your time amusing her, but you may well end up with twice the destruction... just a warning. Also, have you tried a laser pointer to tucker her little self out?

And, finally, age WILL calm her down. She may always be a mad kittie but it will eventually be for shorter periods with more napping. But you may have to wait a year or two... (and then you'll miss her funny little ways...)

  8. I feel like it's partly our fault she misbehaves because she doesn't have room in our house to really get a good run in. That's why I was considering letting her outside but I don't know if it's such a good idea. She is adorable mostly. Right now there is a spider on the inside of a lamp and she is tormented by the shadow it is making on the ceiling. It's times like these I remember why I got her in the first place. She's just very destructive. Our couch was a lot of money and it's now worth squat because she clawed up the corners. Same with a set of floor speakers we have - the screens are all torn up. The scruffing would probably work if she didn't run away the instant we stood up. She knows she is being bad, lol. I wonder if getting her an older friend would help? I don't mean like 10 or 11, but maybe 3 or 4 years old?

Yes, she's a tortie. I've heard about the tortitude thing too. Just wish she wouldn't nibble. I really think a lot of her bad behavior (not the mischief) stems from the young age she was adopted. When I got her she was the last kitty and her mama had already been adopted out for about a week. We have a microfiber blanket and when she is ready to nap she will suck on the blanket while she's mushing. It's almost like she is trying to get milk to come out! It's the most adorable thing.

  9. KSJ, do you provide your kitty with a surface she's *supposed* to use for scratching? Kitties will scratch; the trick is to get them to scratch where you want, and not scratch where you don't want. Try a sisal or cardboard scratcher, and offer it both horizontally and vertically; some cats are very particular about this. Cover surfaces where you don't want the cat scratching or jumping with double-faced sticky tape, and the kitty will soon learn to avoid it.

While you may not have much square footage, you can still give your cats lots of running and playing with wall systems such as:

  10. Yup, she's got two scratchers. One of the cardboard ones laying horizontally, and a rope covered post. She had a carpet post thingy but it got too small for her and she kept knocking it over. She uses them some of the time, when she feels like walking over to them. I have redirected her efforts away from the couch at least by putting two big boxes in front of her scratching corners. I am just thankful she doesn't scratch the carpet! Phew!

  11. My cats do pretty much the same things. For the scratching, we put double sided sticky tape on their favored areas on the furniture. We also have cardboard scratchers. My cats also like scratching wood so we brought in a round piece of wood with bark on it, leveled the top and bottom and we put our plants on it. The cats love it, and all you have to do is just vacuum up the bark. They also like something we never expected - you know those thick rubber mats that fit together like puzzle pieces that hairstylists sometimes have under their chairs? We have 2 squares in front of our back door as a doormat. The cats LOVE to scratch it! They are completely uninterested in carpet or sisal scratchers so we had to improvise.

As far as the water cups go, my oldest cat is fascinated with water and would consistently knock over my husband's bedside water glass. Get one of those covered cups with the straw sticking out of it, or one that has a nozzle on top, like you get at a sporting goods store. If they can't see the water in the cup, they won't be interested in it. My cat also loves to knock over his water bowl. I got one of those no-spill bowls that they make for dogs. You can find them at any pet store. And just don't leave cups with liquid in them lying around to tempt her.

For the jumping on the counter - try leaving sheets of aluminum foil out. They hate the way it feels under their feet.

As far as the blinds go, there may not be much you can do about that. Try spraying Bitter Apple on them. Or just bite the bullet and keep them raised as high as possible. If that doesn't work, just don't get expensive blinds. My cats don't play with them, but they do push them out of the way so they can look out the window. Are you sure that maybe she isn't just doing that?

The poop - yes, I can relate. My male RARELY covers his poop and stinks up the whole place. He's really a prima donna when it comes to the litter box so we try and make sure that the litter box is meticulous at all times. That seems to help a little. Or you can just follow her in there and cover it for her - we have to do that sometimes too.

Finally, getting a kitten for him to play with really worked for us. He was playing aggressively with us, attacking our feet constantly, biting us, etc. When we got our female kitten a few months ago, most of that behavior stopped because he wasn't so bored all the time. Now they play with each other and keep each other occupied.

We also leave toys all over the place. There's a lot of household stuff that you can give them to play with too. My cats love plastic drinking straws, the empty cardboard toilet paper roll, and paper grocery bags. And the laser toy is a massive hit in my house - we are changing the batteries constantly. We have more than one pointer and with multiple red dots flying all over the place, my two kitties are usually exhausted after those play sessions.

She sounds like a normal kitty. To me, it sounds like she's just bored. Think of it this way - she's like a 2 year old child. You just gotta find what will keep her occupied so she doesn't get into as much mischief. All cats are different, just try and find what she likes. She's not trying to annoy you - she's just being a cat.

    Hope everything works out.

  12. I agree with much of what has been said before. You need to remember she is a bored teenager! This too will pass... but I have also had great luck with Feliway, and I think a younger companion would be a great idea, once you have the space... I have three young-ish cats now, 2 are littermates, one a singleton, and they chase each other all over the house, wrestle, and sleep together... so cute to watch! mine love milk bottle rings, toilet paper rolls and paper bags too!

  13. In Afrikaans we call it 'die mal kat klap' - aka the mad-cat clap. They just get a crazy look in their eyes . . . I've had a few kitties like that, especially ex-ferals that were tamed as kittens. They need space, in my opinion. We have 7 cats, and the only reason why we can have any kind of peace in our house is because we have a really big yard, with lots of trees. The cats are almost always out in the garden, they come home to sleep and eat, I never even have to clean the litter boxes, because they use the garden instead (Shakespeare pees on the lawn like a dog, very funny to watch). I'm in SA, so naturally our walls are 6 feet high, with electric fencing on top, so my kitties cant go anywhere. If you cant get a bigger place to live, I would still suggest you get a friend for her. They dont need toys when they have each other to play with, and they dont usually break each other :)
