Hello again. My kitten, around 5 weeks old, had been feeding on Whiskas tuna in gravy pouches, yet after a visit to the vet today, she was given Hill's dry food for kittens. Bad thing is that she won't go NEAR Hill's, not even sniffing it let alone eating it, but still going crazy for the Whiskas pouches. Wetting the dry food does not help either, though she already can eat dry food. Tried mixing Whiskas wet and Hill's dry, but she just picks out the Whiskas bits, not touching the rest. Now I've been researching online and there are so many conflicting ideas on this, some say Hill's is good quality, others say it's poor quality, some favour dry food while others favour wet food, I really have no idea! And after paying the Hill's around 5 times the money I had to give the vet, this is all the more sad. What should I do?

You're right JCD, there is a sea of varying opinions on this subject, and TDK is no different!
Advantages of wet - more water intake (so less likely to cause kidney problems), and many say more nutritionally sound
Advantages of dry - better for teeth (less plaque build up), easier to leve out for cats who prefer to graze, often cheaper in the long run
It will usually be the cat who guides you, and whatever they prefer is what you'll end up buying. If it is dry, make sure there's always plenty of fresh water about in different locations, many cats don't actually like their water source next to their food source (fussy little buggers aren't they?!)
Hope this helps - others will be along soon with their take on the whole issue!

If you want to try dry..see if you can get a sample from the pet store, a few of the local pet stores does this in my area. I laid out about 4 different dishes of dried cat food for Sophie to try when I switched her to some dry a while back. Make sure you are away though..does your kitty prefer fishy taste, chicken taste? Duck? That way you can narrow down the dry food samples!

Hills is just expensive junk. Look at the ingrediant list - is that food meant for a carnivore? You can get great food for the price of SD like EVO, Nature's Variety Instinct, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness.
Actually, dry food does nothing for a cats teeth. Only raw will ;D
Dry is not cheaper in the long run really if you consider the quality of life of the cat, the high vet bills associated with dry, and how much litter your going to be going through.
Also you have to think of what is more natural for a cat to eat. Prey will be 80%ish water. Dry food is only 8% (which is why the obesity, diabetes, and renal failure near epidemics). Wet food close to 80%.
So dry dehydrates a cat unless the cat drinks a TON of water.
Wet food is much closer to the natural state.
Raw is totally natural :D I feed raw and I have never seen a healthier cat that mine are...not just saying that either.

Most cats will decide what type of food they like. In some cases a cat may even have an allergic reaction that you can't see, and that is why they won't eat it. My cat doesn't like dry food, and will go nuts for canned or wet food. What we do sometimes is just mix the two, and some days just give her one or the other. Try to get the cat to drink water before she is eating the Hill's, and she just may enjoy the wetness of it!!( another thing is put some warm water and Wiska's on the hills, and slowly ween the cat off of the Wiska's).

Actually never get dry food wet - it causes exponential bacterial growth.

My cat a few years ago almost died(I want go into details) but the vet gave me food to feed her and she would not touch the vet food which was in a can.
She always loved whiskas sea food in packs so I went back to that and she is fine now. There is a debate whether dry food is better or wet food, but dry food helps with plake so I just feed them both -
Dry food cleaning a cats teeth is another myth. It doesn't actually makes the problem worse a lot of the time. The ONLY thing that will clean a cats teeth are RMB's (raw meaty bones).
Dry food is either a) swollowed whole or b) when chewed breaks on contact with the teeth (like cherio's).
so dry: doesn't clean teeth, dehydrates cats, causes numerous health issues, full of carbs, full of junky plants and meat...
