My cats have recently learned how to jump onto the kitchen counter. It's really not a huge deal, but i'm nervous that they might go near the stove when it's hot, etc. Is there any way to deter them from doing this, besides using a water bottle to squirt them or bitter spray? We have tried both and it's not helping!

cats on kitchen counter

I used to put sheets of aluminum foil up there. Cats are supposed to hate the feeling of it on their feet. We just reused the same sheet over and over again. Took a few days but it worked for us.

.... IMHO, never a good idea... mostly for sanitary reasons - a consistent, firm "no, no" or whatever word you use to communicate dissaproval - and the foil idea is good too, if they don't "get it" from the voice command. ....... All my cats are trained that if I say "no, no" in semi-loud/firm voice, that they know I don't like what they're doing...... it takes time for them to learn, but if you always use the same word/tone, they will come to understand - just like cats learn their name...... all mine come when called..... they are super smart animals, and really want to please their special hooman....
best of luck!

The aluminum foil and the firm command work for mine... and they are a pretty unruly bunch... now, I can't vouch for what goes on while I am asleep...

My two don't usually jump on my preparation surfaces (well, once in a while Cali will), but they do jump on the counter on the other side of the kitchen. Usually, a very firm 'get down' will get them off. Good luck with your training.

"NO" in a very firm voice, accompanied by pushing them (fairly roughly) off the counter - and/or try banging a couple of saucepans together when they get near anything dangerous, they hate the noise and should soon associate it with being somewhere they shouldn't.
This will make you smile - despite ENDLESSLY telling Pickle to get down when I'm preparing food for our mob, she ALWAYS jumps up - and of course, delays the food for the others. So now, when I shout "DOWN" and she jumps down, her sister Button is waiting for her and boxes her ears as if to say "hey dummy, don't you ever learn? you jump up and we get food later, so quit it!!"

Mine don't get on the counter when I'm at home, but I can tell they do it while I'm away (especially Maverick, who leaves a trail of litter everywhere he goes). Not much I can do about it I guess, but I keep the Clorox scrubber people in business.

I haven't had this issue with my kids but these sound like some great ideas!

I've trained all our cats over the years to a 'Grrrr' then a firm 'NO'. They got the message very quickly. Shadz has learned not to hunt birds now thanks to the 'Grrrr,No'.

A clerk in a pet store told me to get a roll of plastic carpet protector. It has short, dull plastic teeth on one side. Put is tooth side up when not using the counter and cats sill not walk on it. I never got any, but it sounds like it might work. :)

My Sassy does not listen even when I do the firm no. She gets up there and when she hears us she gets down. But the problem is that now the smaller ones are starting to follow her as if they think if she does it why cant we. I am going to try the aluminum foil and see if that works but she is a very stubborn and temperamental cat.
